Botsford Hospital Announces $160 Million Renovation Project

    e-health information.

Only months after announcing an affiliation with Beaumont Health, Botsford Hospital has announced that its Farmington Hills, MI, campus will receive a $160 million renovation.

Construction should begin next summer. “This has been overdue for a number of years as more and more patients in the surrounding communities rely on Botsford,” Botsford CEO Paul LaCasse told Crain’s Detroit Business.

The construction project will add a five-story tower and 80 beds, which will bring the hospital’s number of private patient rooms to a total of 160.

The emergency room and trauma center will also be expanded, and more critical care and observation units will be added. Additionally, the hospital will receive nine new operating rooms for further surgical procedures.

“Right now we are in a space that is too small. Our ER and trauma center has 65,000 patient visits per year. We need space for up to 88,000 because we expect volume to increase,” LaCasse said.

    Merger Goals
Eight hospitals have agreed to combine into Beaumont Health.

The merger, including Oakwood Healthcare Inc. and Botsford Hospital as well as Beaumont Health, was announced in the summer.

Part of the impetus http://mightyjungle.com.au/cialis-tadalafil-online/ behind the move was the fact that it would provide Botsford with greater access to capital for necessary renovations. “Access to capital is driving many of the consolidations in health care. The same is true for Botsford,” LaCasse said. “Our financial performance is good, our cash performance good, but we are not in position to invest in facilities and campus [improvements on our own].”

However, the merger is seen as being mutually beneficial. Brian Connolly, CEO of Oakwood, said a major goal of the affiliation will be greater operating efficiency. About $134 million can be saved by using a single electronic health record system and consolidating administrative duties, he said. Experts estimate that, in general, electronic medical records increase efficiency by about 6% annually.

But LaCasse emphasized that patient care will also be improved through consolidation of EHRs and increased continuity. “If you are a patient in Southeast Michigan, visiting [any Beaumont Health hospital or clinic], you will have a common record,” LaCasse said. “It will be passed from one organization to another.”

  • More Than 2,000 Detroit Seniors Kicked Out of Historic Buildings

More Than 2,000 Detroit Seniors Kicked Out of Historic Buildings

    Helping an old man

Detroit’s Griswold Building in Capitol Park used to offer housing with fixed, subsidized rent to low-income seniors. That changed this year as The Griswold became The Albert, and the 115 seniors who were living in the building were forced by developers to find new accommodations.

Senior Housing Preservation Detroit, a coalition of local agencies, formed to investigate the recent developments to the Downtown/Midtown area and found that as many as 2,000 other seniors nearby are also at risk for eviction.

The displacement comes as more developers aim to target young professionals. The Albert’s website promises “modern comfort, historic charm and unique amenities” in a luxury apartment setting.

Diane Smith, a member of the coalition, is working to find a housing preservation strategy for Detroit based on the ones that have been successful in other states. Smith is also the national development manager for CSI Support and Development, a nonprofit developer of affordable rental properties in Detroit.

Healthy communities, said Smith, need to have “a broad mix of income and broad mix of ages.”

Smith said that developers could use other strategies to push for senior housing, such as inclusionary zoning to set aside housing for low-income individuals and families.

Another strategy would be to preserve the current senior housing buildings that have federal contracts due to expire.

Tim Wintermute, executive director of the Hannan Foundation, gave three options for this strategy. The buildings could be sold to a nonprofit that will maintain the senior housing and renew those federal contracts; the buildings could retain some units covered by the project and transfer others to newly constructed or rehabilitated buildings; or transfer the entire contract and rent subsidies to a new or rehabilitated building.

Some in Detroit argue that the shift of seniors to urban cores is actually good for cities, including struggling ones like Detroit. With an estimated 27 million adults poised to need long-term care or other senior housing by the year 2050, more could choose a city area like Detroit.

This could revitalize the area as seniors look for more active lifestyles without having to drive to access amenities and entertainment options. They could also make more trips to the doctor and be able to interact more with members of the community.

  • Detroit Will Have to Delay Cement Construction Projects Due to Cement Shortage

Detroit Will Have to Delay Cement Construction Projects Due to Cement Shortage

    foundation for home building

A shortage of cement, a key binding component used in the production of concrete, is causing a major delay in construction projects throughout Michigan and the Great Lakes Region.

The cement industry is blaming the lack of cement on last year’s harsh winter, saying that shipping towards the end of the winter season was delayed because of the lingering effects of the polar vortex. Over the winter, the Great Lakes froze over almost completely, which in turn meant that shipping companies had to wait longer in order to be able to complete shipments across the lakes. An oil boom in North Dakota also tied up shipping methods, adding to the delay of springtime cement shipping.

“As the polar vortex continued, cement storage facilities remained full. When the weather warmed, construction picked up as did the demand for cement. However, transportation bottlenecks resulted in cement sufficient to meet pent-up customer demand was not able to make it to the Great Lakes region in what was an usually heightened and compressed seasonal demand period,” noted Michigan cement producer Lafarge North America, according to the Detroit Free Press.

As a result, even projects that are usually quick and simple to complete are being put off much longer than is typical for this time of year. Homeowners looking to have their driveways redone with concrete, for instance, could be put on a waiting list for over a month.

Some blame the state for the delays, arguing that the Michigan Department of Transportation is claiming priority for its road construction projects, although authorities from the Michigan Concrete Association say that the reconstruction of I-96 was scheduled long before the cement shortage became a problem.

As if the delay were not bad enough, there is also a rush to get construction projects done before the winter season arrives. With weather forecasts predicting another cold, snowy winter, it is unlikely that many projects will be completed over the course of the season.

So what is the solution? Most big construction projects will have to wait their turn, but for homeowners who had hoped to have a cement driveway poured before winter, they may consider choosing a different material for their driveways. Gravel, for example, is another popular choice for driveways and can even last a lifetime.

  • Detroit Public Workers Sue Consultant Over Pension Problems

Detroit Public Workers Sue Consultant Over Pension Problems

Downtown DetroitDetroit is probably the most obvious and unfortunate example of a once-great American city fallen to ruin — in many more ways than one. To add one more financial issue to the pile, city workers and retirees are now blaming what is perhaps an unlikely suspect.

Many people don’t think about where city trustees get their financial advice, but there is usually an unseen entity calculating risk, weighing financial options, and advising trustees as to what will be the best course of action. These are called actuaries, and Detroit’s is the one catching the blow back for the city’s latest financial gaffe.

According to The New York Times, city workers and retirees blame Gabriel Roeder Smith and Company, an actuarial consultant that advises on public pensions for hundreds of clients across the country, for its financial woes. Detroit has worked with Gabriel Roeder since the city started offering pensions in 1923.

One of the effects of Detroit’s bankruptcy is that the pension fund is short and has led to cuts in pensions. In response, a few workers and retirees have taken steps to actually sue Gabriel Roeder. One of the estimated 35,000 workers, retiree Coletta Estes, claims that the consulting firm hid a growing problem with the pension fund and offered poor spending advisement to trustees, which led them to spend money that they didn’t have.

According to Estes, who worked for the city’s water department for 20 years, the firm knew about the issue “in concert with the plan of trustees to further their self-interest.”

Estes is not the only one who blames Gabriel Roeder for the shortfall; members of the city’s police and fire departments have also brought lawsuits against the firm.

Gabriel Roeder says that the lawsuits “are factually, legally and procedurally infirm and reflect a gross misunderstanding of the nature of actuarial services.”

This isn’t the first time that Detroit has been in hot water over their handling of public pensions. According to The New York Times, just last year it was uncovered that the city had overpaid billions of additional pension benefits, much more than the city could afford, and much more than was necessary. The pension problem in Detroit escalates the issue of already financially burdened Americans and retirees — about 25% of Americans believe that they will have to work until the age of 80 to be able to retire comfortably. Many retirees dependent on pensions to help them manage in retirement, which is problematic when the city slashes them.

What does this mean for the recipients of the overpayments? For Estes, at least, she must pay back $25,000 to the city when she reaches the age of retirement.

Detroit isn’t the only bankrupt city, but for others the financial fallout doesn’t always amount to a pension problem. According to The Los Angeles Times, Stockton, California, has filed for bankruptcy but has been able to formulate a way out of it — while keeping public pensions intact.

  • GM Makes Unprecedented Genius Marketing Move in Wake of Chevy Guy’s World Series TV Disaster

GM Makes Unprecedented Genius Marketing Move in Wake of Chevy Guy’s World Series TV Disaster

Baseball on the Infield Chalk LineIt was Game Seven of the World Series, and General Motors had sent Chevrolet executive and lifelong baseball fan Rikk Wilde to present one lucky player with the World Series MVP award. Wilde, a Kansas City liaison for GM and an adamant fan of the Kansas City Royals, had hoped to present the award to a player on his home team.

Instead, after the San Francisco Giants shut out the Royals for five innings and nabbed Game Seven, the MVP award went to Giants player Madison Bumgarner — definitely a bit of a letdown for Wilde, who would be presenting the keys to a new 2015 Chevy Colorado as part of the award.

When Fox Sports announcer Erin Andrews invited Wilde up to the podium, he was clearly quite flustered. Sweating profusely and desperately clutching a notepad for reference, he started stumbling over the marketing spiel that was supposed to convince a global audience that Chevy’s newest product is worth the hype. Instead, he came up with a bizarre combination of a pre-planned marketing tagline and an ad-libbed, casual conversation:

“It [the 2015 Colorado] combines class-winning and leading, you know… technology and stuff, with Wi-Fi powered by OnStar.”

Social media users grabbed onto Wilde’s trainwreck of a speech and ran with it. The hashtags #ChevyGuy and #TechnologyAndStuff were trending on Twitter within 24 hours. At first, the hashtags came with veiled insults about his personal appearance, likening him to the famous SNL comedian Chris Farley, who was equally as awkward in the spotlight, but who acted that way on purpose.

But the sentiment started to change after a few hours — probably after Twitter users had gotten the chance to watch replays of Wilde’s speech on YouTube — and people realized that they actually quite liked his awkwardness and blatant fail on live TV. Tweets like “We LOVE the #Chevyguy! Don’t change a bit #Wildeman!” started popping up on Twitter.

Recognizing that Wilde’s blunder wasn’t likely to disappear, considering that an estimated 70% of social media users are connected to local businesses and receive regular PR updates, GM’s marketing team did the only thing they could do: they made an unprecedented quick move, and publicly announced their support for Wilde. Advertisements for the 2015 Colorado were edited within 24 hours, and now proudly sell the truck using the catchphrase “You know you want a truck…and stuff,” and news outlets — from NBC’s Today show to The Washington Post — all picked up the story and added fuel to the fire.

GM spokesman Mike Albano took a moment to explain the company’s decision to support Wilde’s TV catastrophe: “He was on message. The truck has technology and stuff. We will use that term and stuff.”
