How Marijuana Became Legal in Missouri

Missouri’s journey to legalizing marijuana has been a significant shift in the state’s cannabis laws. From the early days of medical marijuana to the more recent legalization of recreational use, Missouri has embraced cannabis reform. Understanding the timeline of events that led to this change helps to appreciate the current landscape of dispensaries in Missouri.

Medical Marijuana Legalization

The first major step towards legal cannabis in Missouri came in November 2018, when voters approved Amendment 2 by a 66% margin. This measure legalized medical marijuana for qualifying patients with conditions such as chronic pain, epilepsy, and PTSD.

The law also allowed patients to grow up to six plants and purchase up to 4 ounces of cannabis each month from licensed dispensaries. The first medical marijuana sales began in October 2020, marking a new era for cannabis in Missouri.

Recreational Marijuana Legalization

The push for recreational marijuana in Missouri gained momentum over the years. In 2022, this effort culminated in Amendment 3, a ballot initiative that aimed to legalize recreational cannabis use for adults 21 and over. On November 8, 2022, Missouri voters approved Amendment 3 by a 53% to 47% margin. This vote made Missouri one of the growing number of states to legalize cannabis for recreational use.

Under the new law, adults can legally possess up to 3 ounces of cannabis and grow up to six flowering plants, six nonflowering plants, and six clones at home with a registration fee. The law also allowed for the establishment of dispensaries in Missouri, which can sell cannabis products with a 6% state sales tax. Local governments are also permitted to impose an additional 3% sales tax.

Impact of the Legalization

The legalization of recreational cannabis in Missouri went into effect on December 8, 2022. The first licensed sales of recreational cannabis occurred on February 3, 2023, marking a significant milestone in the state’s cannabis industry. This legalization not only expanded the market for cannabis but also introduced measures to expunge nonviolent cannabis-related offenses, provide healthcare for veterans, and support substance abuse treatment programs.

Dispensaries in Missouri Today

With recreational cannabis now legal, dispensaries in Missouri have expanded their offerings to cater to both medical and recreational users. These dispensaries are required to adhere to strict regulations, ensuring the safety and quality of the products they sell. Whether you are a medical patient or a recreational user, Missouri’s dispensaries provide a range of cannabis products, including flower, edibles, concentrates, and more.
