Rare Stage 3 Melanoma Diagnosed In Michigan Boy
The holiday season is supposed to be a time of joyous celebration and happiness. Unfortunately for the Agosta family from Michigan, much of theirs this year has been spent in and out of an Ann Arbor hospital. That’s because their 8-year-old son, Landon, was recently diagnosed with stage three melanoma, according to Fox 2 Detroit.
This advanced form of skin cancer is rare in a child of Landon’s age, especially when considering his habit of wearing a UV sunshirt in the sun. Overall, only about 2% of children his age are diagnosed with this form of cancer.
“Every doctor we’ve talked to about this has assured us it’s not something we did. Unfortunately, though, they can’t tell us why either,” said Landon’s dad, Joe Agosta. “There’s no reason why it’s happening to him.”
Regardless of how or why it’s happening, the family had to quickly move to a more forward thinking mindset of how they can beat this disease. In order to do this, Landon started receiving an aggressive, experimental form of treatment five days a week at the beginning of December called Interferon injections.
The injections are similar to chemotherapy in that they boost the immune system so much it attacks all the cells in the patient’s body. There are three different layers of skin in the human body, which are the epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis. The stage of Landon’s diagnosis suggests it has reached the lower dermis portion of skin.
A GoFundMe page was created by the family for donations to help offset gas, lodging, and other various expenses while they continue to help Landon fight. Any size amount helps and is a great way to spread the holiday spirit.
When asked what helps give him strength during such a tough time, Landon had one very simple answer: “My family.”
