  • Courser and Gamrat Are Household Names in Michigan — But Neither Has a House Seat Anymore After Sex Scandal

Courser and Gamrat Are Household Names in Michigan — But Neither Has a House Seat Anymore After Sex Scandal

Historic Building Courtroom 3It’s getting harder these days to distinguish between reality TV stars and politicians — and we aren’t talking about presidential hopeful Donald Trump. The Michigan House of Representatives was full of drama just last week after a 14-hour session, two failed votes, and one sex scandal between two Tea Party Representatives resulting in a resignation and an expulsion from office.

That actually might even be more interesting than a Trump reality show, to be honest.

According to the Detroit Free Press and Associated Press, GOP Rep. Todd Courser resigned from his House seat early Friday morning a little after 3 a.m. Just an hour later, Republican Rep. Cindy Gamrat was expelled from her House seat in a 91-12 vote.

Courser, 43 and representing Lapeer, and Gamrat, 43 and representing Plainwell, had been caught in an extramarital affair. That would have been enough to put both of their careers in jeopardy, considering that they both campaigned for their respective seats on a platform of conservative Christian values.

Upon being found out, Courser apparently decided to fix the situation by making it even worse: he sent himself a fake email, pretending to be an anonymous blackmailer, and (falsely) accusing himself of trying to solicit a male prostitute for sex.

The Chicago Tribune reported that Courser called himself a “bi-sexual porn addicted sex deviant [and] gun toting Bible thumping… freak.” It appears that his creativity ran out when he discussed Gamrat, however, who was simply called a “tramp.”

The most reasonable explanation of Courser’s email is that he figured he could cover up the real affair with an even more dramatic, fake affair.

Except that Courser decided to talk about his fake blackmailing plan with a staffer, who happened to be recording the conversation. Courser asked the staffer to send out the email to Capitol officials, but the staffer refused and was fired.

The secret audio recording eventually made its way to the press — well after Courser had time to write scathing Facebook posts about his blackmailer and the vicious “Lansing mafia” conspiracy against him, and after he had filed a police report stating that he and Gamrat had both been receiving “threatening text messages.”

According to the Chicago Tribune, authorities stated that these texts were sent from a prepaid “burner” phone and they had already filed warrants to obtain records of the text messages from the network provider.

Allowing officials to break past the privacy settings of a personal phone or social media account is something intended to protect individuals from harm, and indeed would have been useful if a blackmailer had been attacking Courser and Gamrat. However, it wouldn’t necessarily save them from litigation, as this is still considered admissible evidence in court.

But after details of the scandal began leaking out, Michigan lawmakers decided that the two representatives had “obliterated the public trust,” to use the words of Rep. Ed McBroom, and the unhappy couple would have to go.

The approximate 90,000 residents in the former districts of Courser and Gamrat now have no elected representative until March 2016, when special elections will be held.

Info of 10,000 Employees Compromised Though the Michigan Catholic Conference Security Breach

    Theft, id, cyber.

Security breaches: they’re affecting nearly every single business, government organization, and individual person in the U.S. today. And the latest data breach in Michigan showed that local churches are not excused from these threats anymore.

On August 28, it was discovered that hackers infiltrated the system of the Michigan Catholic Conference, a Catholic agency in Lansing that covers payroll processing and employee benefits for businesses across the state. According to theDetroit Free Press, the Michigan Catholic Conference sent letters to more than 10,000 employees on Friday informing them that their personal information had been compromised in the cyber attack.

The company stated that it would pay for a year-long membership to a subscription identity-protection service for each of the employees.

This service provides insurance policies worth up to $1 million, covering everything from lost wages to possible fraudulent charges made on an individual’s stolen card number. The policy even covers the cost of a private investigator, the Royal Oak Patch stated, should someone need these services if they are targeted following the release of their personal information.

As common as security breaches have become in the past few years, cyber analysts have found that this personal information is actually, in many cases, more valuable than credit card numbers; data for a single individual can be packaged and sold on the web, giving buyers the flexibility of targeting a person via multiple platforms.

It’s also the smallest mistakes that companies make, unintentionally, which tend to result in security threats. Something as simple as bundling important company info in one Administrator account — and then locking that account with a weak and predictable password — is responsible for an estimated 80% of all security breaches.

For the Michigan Catholic Conference, the hackers appear to have broken through agency’s computer system firewall and access each employee’s name, Social Security number, birth date, address, and annual salary. The company has already placed new security features into the system so that anyone trying to access the data now will get a series of numbers rather than coherent information.

Detroit Far Behind International Cities in Public Transportation Development

    City Bus End Profiles

There’s a recent trend among local youths of shouting the popular hip-hop phrase, “Detroit vs. Everybody.” When it comes to public transportation, maybe it’s time the city starts borrowing a few ideas from “everybody” instead of blindly shunning them.

According to the Detroit Free Press, Robin Boyle, the long-time chair of urban planning at Wayne State University, has a few ideas about how Detroit can catch up with the rest of the world when it comes to public transportation.

Boyle recently traveled abroad, noting how advanced the public transportation systems are in places like the Ruhr Valley of Germany and Melbourne, Australia.

Investing in quality public transportation does a lot more than get you from one place to the other. By committing to a combination of public transit and private vehicles, the Ruhr Valley has seen tremendous growth, and Melbourne recently ranked as the most livable city in the world by the Economist Intelligence Unit’s annual global livability index.

“I can tell you it was seamless,” Boyle said of traveling around the Ruhr Valley area. “You could go from one end of the Ruhr to the other on public transport. You’re moving through different communities but you wouldn’t know it. And if you get off the train, it doesn’t matter, you can just get on another.”

A revival in public transportation could help to solve Detroit’s financial woes. Transportation is one of the world’s largest industries, and includes trains, buses, taxis, trucks, and logistics services.

It’s also useful for more than economic revival. Both the Ruhr Valley and Melbourne’s public transportation system includes bicycle and walking paths, which contribute to a healthy community by promoting exercise and limiting harmful chemical emissions.

“Everywhere you went the first thing you saw was a big map beside the bus station or the train station…so you could work out how to walk everywhere you went. Valium isconsidereda veryunsafe drug, and thefeedback about it is very ambiguous. Although it isvery effective in the https://www.sdarcwellness.com/valium-diazepam-online-10-mg/ treatment ofalcohol addiction, as well aspsychosomatic and post-traumatic disorders, you must not abuse it, as it cancause addiction and has many negative effects. Therefore,it should be taken onlyon prescription. We could walk literally everywhere,” Boyle said.

Boyle believes the process of achieving that level of connected public transportation requires a combination of civic leaders supporting and funding the projects, and the Detroit community buying in to the concept of efficient public transit.

Then again, Eminem could always just make a song about it. That seems to work pretty well.

  • Detroit’s Children Can Eat Healthy This School Year with These Experts’ Tips

Detroit’s Children Can Eat Healthy This School Year with These Experts’ Tips

Mix of fresh fruits on wicker bascket

With the back-to-school season upon us, dietitians and other nutrition experts in the Detroit area are gearing up to help kids start the new academic year off healthy.

Laura Meagher, a registered dietitian at Beaumont Hospital in the Detroit suburb of Royal Oak, advised parents to quit saying “I don’t have time” and start making time to help themselves and their kids eat healthy. This is especially important, she said to CandG Newspapers, as parents make lunches for their children to take to school.

Making those healthy choices all starts with education, said Meagher. “Take them to the grocery store and walk around, and have them look at things they haven’t tried,” she suggested.

But how is that possible for area parents and guardians, many of whom live below the poverty line? Meagher explained that one place urban families can get healthy foods for less is at the farmers’ market.

An estimated 97% of the farms in the United States are run by families, including family partnerships and corporations, and many of these families make their money by selling fruits and vegetables at local farmers’ markets.

For families who live in the city of Detroit, this can be an excellent way to get access to healthy foods for children’s (and even adults’) lunches.

Meagher also recommends adding produce to kids’ lunches that is already prepared, such as fruit and vegetable slices. While some supermarkets do sell pre-packaged fruits and veggies, Meagher said, families should ideally choose farm-to-table and fresh produce if possible.

Of course, that choice may not apply to many Detroit children, who receive free or reduced price lunches in public schools.

The city’s public schools serve nearly 250,000 lunches per week, according to an op-ed in the Detroit News by Betti Wiggins. Wiggins is the executive director of Detroit Public Schools’ Office of school nutrition, and said that the program will provide a high return on investment in the city’s youth.

She also agrees that school lunches need to encourage healthy eating habits, especially for those who receive these meals for free.

“School nutrition programs should strengthen a child’s knowledge of healthy eating habits,” Wiggins wrote. “Food served at educational facilities should always aim at maximizing good health and proper nutrition. There is no room in an educational setting for anything less.”

September is also Fruit and Veggies — More Matters Month, which was launched in 2007 by the Produce for Better Health Foundation to help educate consumers about making healthy food choices. The foundation also lets parents know how many fruits and vegetables people should eat each day.

Halle Saperstein, a registered dietitian with Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital, said that children between ages three and five should have between one and one-and-a-half cups of fruit and vegetables each per day. In addition to these applications, Provigil is sometimes used for the purposes, not approved by the FDA. You can find more information about the drug on https://shlclubhouse.org/provigil-online/. Children between six and 11 should try to eat between three and four servings of fruit and four to six servings of vegetables.

Older kids and adults, she said, should aim for five servings per day of fruits and vegetables each.

Saperstein adds that although fresh is best for fruits and veggies, frozen is the next best option because the freezing process can lock in the freshness.

  • Local Detroit Superheroes Want Kids to Read More

Local Detroit Superheroes Want Kids to Read More

    Father reading to his sons

With screens of varying sizes taking over our daily lives, fewer people take the time to pick up physical books anymore. And sadly, that trend includes our children. Although more than half of nine-year-old kids read every day, just 17% will still be reading daily by the end of high school.

And across the Detroit region, local citizens are taking it upon themselves to close that reading gap. Detroit comics enthusiast and convention organizer Maia Crown Williams is organizing the second annual Midwest Ethnic Convention for Comics and Arts, or MECCAcon, this September. The convention will promote the work of comic book creators of color, including artists from Detroit.

“It is my mission to make sure that children know that all ‘heroes’ do not look the same, that many actually look just like them,” says Williams.

Studies show that when kids can personally relate to protagonists, they’re more likely to keep reading. And Williams isn’t the only hero on a mission to get kids reading. Chelsea Liddy has organized another comics convention called ComiqueCon this November in Dearborn, which will focus on women in comics, both on page and behind the scenes.

“I kept seeing ‘women in comics’ panels at major conventions and I just started thinking that what women had to say about working in comics could take up an entire convention,” Liddy says.

And now it will. Liddy is also working with local comic book shops and artists to organize the event. The creators hope that highlighting more diverse comic books will help inspire a more diverse comic book audience. Because although comic book superhero films have been dominating the box office for nearly 10 years, the films almost always feature white, male heroes.

Earlier this summer, the Ann Arbor Downtown Library hosted another event specifically for kids, the Seventh Annual Kids Read Comics Convention. And it’s projects like that that make the Detroit area the perfect venue for events like Comiquecon and MECCAcon, Liddy says.

“It’s a super diverse region and there is a ton of talent in the area…I think that when we work together, we can really make change.”
