  • Are Generic Medicines Really a Cost Effective Alternative?

Are Generic Medicines Really a Cost Effective Alternative?

young medical doctor in hospitalThe cost of prescription drugs in the U.S. rises about 12% every year, which is why so many people have begun turning to generic medicines. However, are these cost-effective solutions that much more affordable?

According to a new analysis from Pembroke Consulting, a firm that tracks prescription drug distribution, half of all generic drugs that were sold through retailers actually became more expensive over the past 12 months, with the prices paid by pharmacies more than doubling for one in 11 generics.

The price of some notable generic medicines like tetracycline antibiotic increased by over 17,000% in fact.

“This is widespread,” said Adam Fein of Pembroke Consulting. “This is not an isolated incident concerning a few drugs affecting just some patients. It’s an industry wide phenomenon and it’s not only going to become big enough to move the needle on the earnings reports for some companies, it’s a national health care issue. Because if [prices continue to increase], it’s going to touch https://www.saferack.com/buy-norvasc-online/ every one of us.”

Although the reason for such increases isn’t quite clear, many believe that raw material shortages are responsible.

“Suddenly the market has dried up. Certain milligram amounts we ask for we can’t even find,” said Pharmacist Bill Nabors.

It’ll be consumers who feel the sting of increased prices first, with companies that have self-funded health insurance plances that pay claims as they’re submitted by employees following shortly after. After all, prescription drugs make up about 10% of health care costs.

“We’ll see it in the claims down the road,” explained Tom Finneran, vice president, employee benefits at Mount Washington brokerage TJ&S Inc.. “It could affect rates due to utilization.”

When push comes to shove and the cost of generics becomes too expensive, Nabors said that patients can speak to their pharmacists to see what could possibly be done.

“We can try to shave costs here and there as best we can and help you transition into the new cost structure.”

  • Summer Auto Sales Hit Record Highs

Summer Auto Sales Hit Record Highs

Mid-year sales reports are in, and the auto industry appears to be reaching pre-recession levels of car sales slowly but surely. In fact, some car dealers are even stating that their new car sales have been so high this summer, they’ve been selling out of new models.

USA Today reports that the average time a new car spent on a dealership lot last month hovered around 30 days or less before a buyer swooped in to pick it up — and considering that car dealers consider 60 days to be an optimum amount of time on a lot, 30 days is pretty impressive. Kelley Blue Book notes that all models, ranging from luxury cars to tiny, fuel-efficient models have been in demand this summer. Consumers have even been leaning toward the traditional gas guzzling sports cars and SUVs, and experts theorize that stable gas prices have a lot to do with recent buying trends. Car sales are predicted to reach about 16.1 million in 2014 — although experts note that sales might actually go as high as 16.8 million — and this summer’s sales reports seem to support the latter prediction.

And although this sales reports focus heavily on June and July sales, as USA Today notes, August tends to be the month with the highest number of car sales each year. Although some dealers have noted that buyers are more than happy to buy new cars without any incentives or ultra-competitive financing plans, TrueCar reports that many dealers have begun offering (or are planning to offer) more cash incentives in order to compete with used car dealers.

Some dealers have already begun beefing up their lots with more models, but it’s worth noting that car manufacturers are still hesitant to increase production; after all, the recession is still pretty fresh in everyone’s minds, and substantially increasing production too quickly could actually hurt the industry and send it spiraling again.

But at the moment, it seems that there really has never been a better time to buy a car.

  • Rare Packers Items Auctioned Off at National Sports Collectors Convention

Rare Packers Items Auctioned Off at National Sports Collectors Convention

Green Bay Packers fans squared off against each other today for priceless pieces of team memorabilia at the National Sports Collectors Convention in Cleveland.

Heritage Auctions’ Platinum Night Sports Auction is traditionally the most heavily-attended live auction of the year, with sports fans coming from all over to buy their piece of sports history. Items range from Muhammed Ali’s Gloves to Mickey Mantle Baseball Cards and Babe Ruth’s 702nd home run ball, but Packers fans have even more reason to be excited.

The auction includes a game-winning extra point football from Vince Lombardi’s first victory as a Packers Coach in 1959, a signed football from the 1946 team including autographs from Tony Canadeo, Curley Lambeau, Bruce Smith, and many others, and a 1921 packers “Dope Sheet” that served as a program for the franchise’s first game.

Of particular interest are former packers President Lee Joannes’ pair of 1967 Packers Super Bowl I championship gold cufflinks. Jewelry items like cufflinks are extremely rare because jewelry to commemorate sports events is produced on a very time-sensitive and limited scale, so limited that there are only two known sets of Packers cufflinks from the 1967 season.

At the moment, championship jewelry is one of the most popular collectible categories because each item commemorates such a special event, with the added bonus of optional wearability.

The items are expected to make around $10,000, though competitive fans could easily drive prices up. Wisconsin sports history has fetched high prices in the past. Last year, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s Milwaukee Bucks jersey sold for $80,000 and his first game-warn goggles from 1974 fetched a price tag of $6,500. Oscar Robertson’s 1970-71 Bucks championship season jersey went for $55,000.

Other non-packers items up for auction include the only remaining Lou Gehrig-signed ticket from his retirement speech game on July 4, 1939, a signed love note from Joe DiMaggio to Marilyn Monroe and Michael Jordan’s $33 million contract from the Chicago Bulls.

  • Nextcare Announces New Insurance Plan to Allow Urgent Care Facilities to Act as Primary Care Centers

Nextcare Announces New Insurance Plan to Allow Urgent Care Facilities to Act as Primary Care Centers

An Arizona-based insurance provider is making waves by offering a first-of-its-kind employer insurance coverage plan that would effectively turn urgent care centers in Dallas, Texas into primary care providers. Nextcare, the insurer in question, is pairing with Physician Care Direct out of North Carolina to offer this new plan that will allow employees in the Metroplex to opt-in to the Primacare system of urgent care facilities under the Employer Health Ownership Plan. In effect, this means any employee that opts into this primary care coverage as part of a work benefits package can seek treatment — and have it covered — at 13 separate locations in North Texas.

Just Another Sign That Urgent Care Facilities Are the Future
It’s not too hard to see why news of the unique insurance program is leaving so many traditional healthcare providers trying to survive the wake. That being said, the development also shouldn’t be seen as surprising. From 2009 to 2014, urgent care facilities across the United States showed annual growth of 8.2%. According to statistics from the Urgent Care Association of America, the number of centers spread across the country has exploded to 9,000.
    Health insurance business

The shift has pushed the urgent care industry in the U.S. to one that is now worth an estimated $14.5 billion. As traditional healthcare facilities and urgent care centers work to define their roles in the modern healthcare environment, everyone from insurance providers to the ordinary citizen is having to adjust. Once the dust settles, you can be sure that Nextcare will be just the first of many insurance providers bringing urgent care into the fold.

If you had the option to choose primary care coverage for urgent care facilities in your area, would you jump at the chance? Let us know why or why not in the comment section below.

  • Debt, Negligence Leave Detroit’s Roads a Deadly Place for Drivers, Pedestrians

Debt, Negligence Leave Detroit’s Roads a Deadly Place for Drivers, Pedestrians

A rash of traffic fatalities is leaving many in Detroit wondering just what the city government is going to do to improve traffic conditions. According to a report from Detroit News, the city has reached a record 69 traffic fatalities as of August 2, marking a year-over-year increase of 25% with four months left to go. Of the fatalities, 41 were a product of hit-and-run accidents.

Part of the problem is that the Motor City remains under a heap of debt, barely able to maintain its roadways, let alone buff up the police presence to get a handle on reckless drivers. For Steve Dolunt, Assistant Chief of the Detroit Police Department, the issue is just as much about “stupid” drivers as it is about a city grappling with its debt.

“There are a lot of reasons this is happening…poor lighting, people walking in the streets instead of using the sidewalks, texting while driving,” Dolunt said in an interview with Detroit News.

On the One Hand, the City of Detroit is Failing Its Citizens
There is undoubtedly a correlation between the uptick in traffic fatalities and the city’s continued financial problems. Detroit has struggled to find ways to pay off its $18 billion in debt, going so far as to declare bankruptcy and attempting to dissolve pension plans for city workers.

Currently, over half of the city’s traffic lights don’t work properly or at all, leading to much of the confusion between pedestrians and drivers that causes fatalities. Detroit estimates the lights will be replaced by 2016, unable to get the job done sooner because of a lack of funding and manpower.

On the Other, Increasingly Distracted Drivers Are to Blame
Having said that, the problem is exacerbated by the increase in drivers acting irresponsibly behind the wheel. As with most places across the country, drivers in Detroit are increasingly texting while driving. As of 2011, 3,311 people were killed due to distracted driving a year. With texting behind the wheel making a crash 23-times more likely and more drivers getting used to the practice, it’s no wonder why traffic-related fatalities continue to rise.
