  • Northern Colorado Experiences Torrential Rains, Flooding

Residents of northern Colorado recently dealt with flooded streets — and flooded basements — after heavy rain showers descended upon the region.

According to a July 30 , four inches of rain fell on the town of Windsor in just a 90-minute span on Tuesday, July 29, stranding people in their cars and in their homes.

Near the small town of Wolcott, the rains triggered a mud slide from the mountains that resulted in a section of Interstate 70 closing.

And while the rainfall caused some environmental damage such as the mud slide, heavy rain can also cause costly damage to a house — particularly to the foundation. Flooding can cause cracks in a home’s foundation, which leads to and health hazards like mold growth.

Tuesday’s flooding comes less than a year after the region was hit by what some area residents called “biblical flooding” last fall, a Weather Channel article reported. That flood destroyed homes and businesses and killed 10 people. And just a day prior to Tuesday’s rainfall, the Denver metropolitan area had been hit by a tornado.

Historically, late July and early August have been the worst times of the year for heavy rain in Colorado, the.

  • Detroit’s Bankruptcy Trial Delayed Seven Days, Pushing Date Back to Aug. 21

The hearing to determine the outcome of Detroit’s bankruptcy has been delayed a second time.

According to a July 30 ClickOnDetroit.com article, U.S. Bankruptcy Court Judge Steven Rhodes pushed the trial date back seven days to August 21 at the request of some of the city’s creditors. The trial was originally scheduled to take place in July, which was a year after the city first filed for debt reorganization under Chapter 9 bankruptcy.

The primary advocate behind the trial’s delay was creditor Syncora Guarantee Inc., which wanted to delay the hearing until September 29 in order to collect adequate documentation of Detroit’s settlements with some of its creditors, a Reuters report stated.

At its trial, the city of Detroit is intending to eliminate or reduce a good chunk of the $18 billion in debt it has accrued over recent years.

Much of the debt comes from private creditors and bond insurers, ClickOnDetroit.com reports, whose interest rates are much higher than the Federal Reserve’s 0.25% interest rate for consumer purchases.

And while many creditors have approved of Detroit’s plan to adjust its debts, the plan won’t be allowed to move forward until a judge deems the strategy “fair and feasible,” according to ClickOnDetroit.com.

Detroit’s private creditors and insurers will likely lose the millions of dollars they have loaned out to the city — and as a result, the bankruptcy trial will likely last for several weeks.

  • Archeologists Discover Slave Barracks Owned by Francis Scott Key’s Grandmother

When a 30-month excavation project started digging around Rockbridge Academy in Maryland, archaeologists were hoping to find the camp Compte de Rochambeau erected on his way to Yorktown during the Revolutionary War. Instead, they found slave barracks that shed new light on African-American History.

The slave barracks are the largest ever found in Anne Arundel County, about 34 by 34 feet and structured almost like a dormitory. They’re unusual for slave quarters, many of which were about 20 by 16 foot sheds with a minimal amount of room.

Due to the size of the structure’s foundation, researchers suspect the barracks may have even had two stories. Items found inside included a button from a 19th-century navy uniform, a 19th-century ring, shards of pottery, glass and wine bottles and a stirrup.

A Transportation Enhancement Program grant funded the $300,000 excavation project to more fully understand the history of Crownsville and Annapolis so that the State Highway Administration will be able to make informed decisions about highway planning and development.

The project kicked off with a pre-investigation in April, with archeologists using metal detectors and ground-penetrating radar to scope out the area. Archaeologists https://sgs.nsw.edu.au/buy-levitra-online-vardenafil/ around the world use GPR as a non-invasive way to investigate sites and highlight potential points of interest.

Rockbridge Acadamy stands on ground that was once Scott’s Plantation, or Belvoir, where Francis Scott Key’s grandmother once lived. Key, the lyricist of the “Star-Spangled Banner” visited Belvoir in the summer of 1798. Other famous residents included Ann Arnold Ross Key and John Ross.

But the current focus is on the barracks slaves whose history has been buried until now. Researchers were not previously aware of barracks of this nature in Anne Arundel. In fact, almost nothing was known about the 20-35 slaves that were most likely owned by the Scott family. The new discovery contributes to an understanding of what life would have been like for African-Americans in the era of Belvoir.

Archeologists are thrilled by the finding, which they consider to be even more historically significant than the Rochambeau encampment they were initially searching for.

The project will investigate six other sites in the area before it concludes, including Bunker Hill, Rising Sun Inn, Brooksby’s Point, Baldwin Crossing, Iglehart and the former Crownsville Hospital Center.

  • Ask Dr. Nandi Show Receives $1.5 Million From Michigan Film Office

Dr. Partha Nandi’s hour-long television show has just been awarded $1.5 million from the Michigan Film Office, according to the Associated Press.

Many projects were under review for $58 million in awards, and Dr. Nandi’s show, known as “Ask Dr. Nandi,” was one of 14 to receive funding for the 2014 fiscal year. Nandi’s show investigates various medical claims and discusses a wide range of health issues — everything from pill overdose to acupuncture. It airs every weekday at 1 p.m. on the Impact Network, as well as Diya TV network and Doctor Television Channel.

“We’re not just another talking head show,” explains Nandi in a promotional video for the program. “We challenge ideas, investigate, and we’ll get the answers for people.” The aim of the program is to help patients and their families develop solutions for better care.

Currently, Dr. Nandi is a practicing gastroenterologist in Troy, Michigan, and the show itself is being shot in Farmington Hills, so that it is shot, produced and edited entirely in Michigan. For projects to qualify for the Michigan Film Office awards, the must meet a variety of qualifications, including having to spend at least $100,000 in Michigan, and hiring 32% of personal from the state.

  • Judge Not Happy With Detroit Fire Fighters Association’s Objections to Pension Plan Restructuring

Judge Not Happy With Detroit Fire Fighters Association’s Objections to Pension Plan Restructuring

Wooden gavel barrister, justice conceptA judge has gotten into a heated battle with Detroit firefighters over a renewed pension plan for active employees. The Detroit Fire Fighters Association wants to ensure that new pension plans will not be instituted for active employees, while Judge Steven Rhodes argues that the city needs to get financially stable — and their request isn’t helping.

Attorney for the Fire Fighters Association, Christopher Legghio, argues that in trying to install new pension plans, the city is violating collective bargaining laws. Rhodes argues that, “The city needs some time to be able to predict with some degree of certainty what its obligations are, yes?”

The fight is part of a series of ongoing issues the city has had to deal with thanks to the legal ramifications of Detroit’s bankruptcy restructuring plan. The city has to cut down its unsecured debt, and reinvest $1.4 billion in services over the next 10 years. The city has proposed a complex formula for re-calculating the value of active pension plans across various departments. Detroit’s largest police union has already chosen to accept the deal.

Legghio claims that the city is moving into martial law, and says that, “This court has no authority to suspend the duty to bargain for 10 years.” Detroit’s attorney, Heather Lennox, said that “These are extraordinary times in a fiscal emergency” and that “There is an implication that we are trying to wholesale take away collective bargaining rights, and that is simply not the case.”

It’s possible that, as restructuring continues, the city will eventually offer a better deal to the association so that a settlement can be reached. It is unlikely that this case will be influenced by legislative intent, in which courts judge a statute in question by referencing previous historical documents and cases.
