The nine protected characteristics are very important in identifying what is protected by law. Our behaviors at work need to be closely evaluated. Equality means each individual or group of people is given the same opportunities or resources. Each person has different needs and needs to be treated accordingly. Diversity is to respect and appreciate all groups of people. Diversity is inclusion. It means recognizing that we are all different, but should be treated fairly and with respect. Having equal access to resources is important. Culture is pictured as an iceberg. Only a small piece is visible. Most culture is hidden. Social norms, values, and concepts of justice are the hidden parts of culture. Although we see what is above the water line, we cannot see what is below the surface.
