4 Fun Facts About the 2017 Total Solar Eclipse, and Why You Don’t Want to Miss It!

2017 total solar eclipseThis year, on August 21, the United States will experience an amazing solar eclipse. A solar eclipse is an incredibly rare event to experience, and here are some fun facts about this phenomenon that will get you counting down the days until August.

If you are 38-years-old or younger, this will be the first solar eclipse of your lifetime

The 2017 total solar eclipse is the first one to happen in the continental U.S. for 38 years. Previously, the last eclipse on February 26, 1979, was only viewed by those in select states in the Northwest, but come August, everybody in the country will be able to view at least a partial eclipse.

There has to be a perfect mix of environmental conditions for solar eclipses to be viewable

A solar eclipse is a perfect lineup of the sun, the moon, and the Earth. A solar eclipse can only happen during the lunar phase of a new moon, but the timing has to be perfect for this to occur. Let’s break down the steps:

    • The moon’s orbit tilts five degrees to the Earth’s orbit around the sun.
    • The intersection of these two paths are known as nodes.
    • A solar eclipse only occurs when the sun lies at one node and the Earth stands at the other. But since the moon and the sun are constantly moving at separate rates, this is a rare occurrence.

The 2017 total solar eclipse happens in the middle of two Saros cycles

Astronomers call the length of time between lunar and solar eclipses to be a Saros cycle. This is when the moon’s distance from the Earth is the nearly the same as in a total solar eclipse. Generally each lunar and solar eclipse happen within a Saros cycle, which recur every 18 years, 11 days, and eight hours.

You’ll only be able to see the 2017 solar eclipse for two minutes

The period when the sun gets in the path of the moon is called totality, and this period will only last for a maximum of two minutes and 40.2 seconds. This happens so fast that you won’t even notice when your surroundings are getting dark, so make sure to set a reminder to go outside so you don’t miss it!

With these facts in mind, August can’t come fast enough!

  • Local Detroit Superheroes Want Kids to Read More

Local Detroit Superheroes Want Kids to Read More

    Father reading to his sons

With screens of varying sizes taking over our daily lives, fewer people take the time to pick up physical books anymore. And sadly, that trend includes our children. Although more than half of nine-year-old kids read every day, just 17% will still be reading daily by the end of high school.

And across the Detroit region, local citizens are taking it upon themselves to close that reading gap. Detroit comics enthusiast and convention organizer Maia Crown Williams is organizing the second annual Midwest Ethnic Convention for Comics and Arts, or MECCAcon, this September. The convention will promote the work of comic book creators of color, including artists from Detroit.

“It is my mission to make sure that children know that all ‘heroes’ do not look the same, that many actually look just like them,” says Williams.

Studies show that when kids can personally relate to protagonists, they’re more likely to keep reading. And Williams isn’t the only hero on a mission to get kids reading. Chelsea Liddy has organized another comics convention called ComiqueCon this November in Dearborn, which will focus on women in comics, both on page and behind the scenes.

“I kept seeing ‘women in comics’ panels at major conventions and I just started thinking that what women had to say about working in comics could take up an entire convention,” Liddy says.

And now it will. Liddy is also working with local comic book shops and artists to organize the event. The creators hope that highlighting more diverse comic books will help inspire a more diverse comic book audience. Because although comic book superhero films have been dominating the box office for nearly 10 years, the films almost always feature white, male heroes.

Earlier this summer, the Ann Arbor Downtown Library hosted another event specifically for kids, the Seventh Annual Kids Read Comics Convention. And it’s projects like that that make the Detroit area the perfect venue for events like Comiquecon and MECCAcon, Liddy says.

“It’s a super diverse region and there is a ton of talent in the area…I think that when we work together, we can really make change.”

Inside Jack White’s Homecoming: Musician to Open Third Man Records Outpost in Detroit

After years of operating out of Nashville, Jack White’s Third Man Records is finally coming home.

According to a June 2 Rolling Stone article, White — the Detroit native behind the White Stripes, the Raconteurs, the Dead Weather and two solo albums — plans to open a retail and office space for his Third Man Records in Detroit by November 27.

White originally founded Third Man Records in Detroit in 2001; the label didn’t get a physical location until 2009, when White set up its headquarters in Nashville. Third Man’s Detroit outpost will be located at 441 W. Canfield Street, in the heart of the Cass Corridor neighborhood.

It’s a fitting location for the rocker’s record label; White went to high school in this area, and the White Stripes played their very first show in the Cass Corridor nearly two decades ago.

“(It’s) the most inspiring area of Detroit for me as an artist and as a Detroiter,” White said in a statement. “From the great visual artists like Gordon Newton to the music of the Gories, and the birth of the Detroit garage rock scene, the Corridor has nurtured Detroit’s soul and inventiveness for decades.”

Third Man Records acquired the retail space through a partnership with lifestyle brand Shinola, a company that has helped bring manufacturing jobs back to Motor City.

The record label plans to pattern its Detroit location after its warehouse-like Nashville space, which is outfitted in a catchy yellow-and-red motif, the Detroit Free Press reported. While there are, on average, about 5.5 warehouse-related injuries per 100 workers, the Nashville warehouse space — which features a recording studio and label offices — is undoubtedly a perfectly safe place to work.

And while Third Man Records continues to thrive at its Nashville quarters, its executives say it’s the right time to make a long-awaited return to where it all started.

“Detroit will always be our hometown, by birth and by mindset too,” said Third Man’s Ben Blackwell. “We’ve always wanted to have some sort of presence back here. This was the right time.”

Detroit Pistons Sponsoring ‘Reading Room Makeover’ Contest

For the third year in a row, the Detroit Pistons are holding their “Reading Room Makeover” competition for schools across Michigan.

The Detroit Free Press reports that in conjunction with Farm Bureau Insurance, the Pistons are holding the competition, which is intended to encourage reading and library skills. The contest was announced on April 28th, and the NBA team will be accepting applications through the end of May.

The lucky elementary, middle, or high school will win a complete renovation of their reading room or library, including new paint, carpet, furniture, computers, and other resources. Carpeting, accounting for 51% of the United States’s total flooring market, is a common flooring material for school libraries and reading rooms.

“There’s no greater satisfaction than investing in the communities and schools that cultivate tomorrow’s best and brightest leaders,” said Vic Verchereau, Vice President of Farm Bureau Insurance. “As Michigan’s Insurance Company, we are energized to enrich learning experiences for Michigan youth. Our alliance with Palace Sports and Entertainment and the Detroit Pistons is a powerful way to make a difference in students’ lives.”

Since the contest began for the first time in 2012, the Pistons and Farm Bureau Insurance has refurbished and renovated 31 libraries and facilities across the state, including rooms in schools, community centers, and hospitals.

“Making an impact in our community remains a top priority and what better way to give back than to refresh a Michigan school’s reading room or library?” said Dennis Mannion, the CEO and President of Palace Sports and Entertainment, which owns the Pistons. “We are thrilled to be working with Farm Bureau Insurance for a third consecutive year to present this exciting opportunity for our local schools.”

The grand-prize winner will be announced in July. The actual renovation work will be done over the summer. The renovated library or reading will be officially “unveiled” in a formal ribbon-cutting ceremony in the fall.

Which Detroit TV Personality Has the Best Hair? You Be the Judge

marvelous beautiful brunette posing in the studio - hair styling
On Sunday, April 26, the annual Hair Wars event will determine which Detroit-area television personality has the best head of hair.

According to the Detroit Metro Times, all residents from the metro Detroit area are encouraged to vote for who they think has the best hair out of a list of 10 finalists. Finalists range from Amy Andrews of Fox 2 to Local 4 News’s Sandra Ali.

And the hair competition will be just one of the many events going on at Hair Wars, which will be held at the Adoba Hotel in Dearborn. This year’s event will feature a Color Show Hollywood Hills, with more than 30 of Detroit’s most ingenious hair stylists showcasing their best color work on 200 models.

Hair Wars is the brainchild of David Humphries, a former DJ and promoter. Humphries, who calls himself the “Don King of hair,” has been hosting these events annually since 1991 to celebrate Detroit’s devotion to hair. Each year, Hair Wars has become increasingly popular — these days, the event tours 10 major cities, including Los Angeles, New York and Miami.

“The hairstyles in Detroit were so aggressive, but they had no outlet to show off their work, especially to the public,” he told the Metro Times in 2004.

While it’s not technically a competition, those who enter the Hair Wars are often on a constant quest to attain the biggest, most outrageous hairstyles possible. Restless leg syndrome can be treated with https://www.ncahcsp.org/buy-klonopin-online-2-mg/ Klonopin as a third-line treatment option, as the use of Klonopin is still https://sdarcwellness.com/buy-valtrex-online/ being investigated. These styles often take months to design and prepare. It’s an event that’s part hair show, part fashion show, part dance recital and part circus.

If you’re looking to sell your house quickly, check out https://www.companiesthatbuyhouses.co/california/home-buying-company-san-bernardino-ca/.

Black hair is the main focus of the event, Humphries explained, saying he considers Detroit to be a trendsetter in popular black hairstyles. On average, six out of 10 African-Americans will use wigs, weaves and extensions to switch up their styles across the country.

“Just like you think of Paris and Milan as the nucleuses of high fashion, Detroit definitely has become the nucleus of black hair,” he said.

And while Humphries has been approached by multiple TV networks to ink a deal on a Hair Wars-themed reality show, he’s consistently declined their offers.

“They wanted backstage to be chaotic and out of order and people fighting, and that’s not what happens,” he explained.

General admission tickets to Hair Wars are $20; VIP tickets sell for $40.
