More Tattoos Means a Better… Immune System?

The American Journal of Human Biology published a study suggesting that people with multiple tattoos have a stronger immune system.

“Tattooing may stimulate the immune system in a manner similar to vaccination to be less susceptible to future pathogenic infiltration,” the study states.

The Huffington Post reports that for the study, University of Alabama researchers collected saliva samples from 29 volunteers before and after they received tattoos. Nine of the subjects were getting tattooed for the first time.

The saliva samples were needed to test for levels of immunoglobulin A, which is an antibody relating to gastrointestinal systems and respiratory systems, along with cortisol, which is a stress hormone that suppresses immune responses.

“Immunoglobulin A is a front line of defense against some of the common infections,” Christopher Lynn, associate professor of anthropology at the University of Alabama, said.

In the United States, one in five adults have at least one tattoo. This new study might encourage more people to get multiple tattoos not only for aesthetic reasons but for health reasons as well.

The study found that, of all nine first-time tattoo recipients, immunoglobulin A levels declined at a much more significant rate than those with multiple tattoos. The people who already had tattoos had an immune system that was able to handle that kind of stress.

Despite the study’s findings, Lynn states that although multiple tattoos could improve a person’s immune system, a first tattoo could actually make someone more susceptible to illness.

“You can catch a cold because your defenses are lowered from the stress of getting a tattoo,” Lynn said. Once your body returns to equilibrium, however, Lynn adds that “if you continue to stress your body over and over again, it [your equilibrium] adjusts its internal set points and moves higher.”

Whether tattoos actually can solve any real medical problems is still undetermined, but Lynn hopes to at least remove the negative stereotypes surrounding them. “We’d like to take tattoos out of the negative subcultural niche of bikers, sailors, and risky behavior,” Lynn said.

In Michigan, an area tattoo artist is doing just that and even providing a charitable service.

AOL reports that Carrie Metz-Caporusso, a tattoo artist at the Lucky Monkey tattoo parlor in Ann Arbor, held a charity fundraiser in support of those suffering with the water crisis in Flint.

Metz-Caporusso designed a specialty heart tattoo a droplet of water. Each tattoo — called Water Hearts for Flint — was priced at $50 and 100% of the proceeds will go to the Flint Child Health and Development Fund.

Almost Half of Detroit Residents Don’t Have Broadband Internet

According to a new report from the New York Times, about 40% of Detroit’s citizens do not have broadband access to the Internet — even though the FCC has attempted to make the service more available across the country.

According to FCC data, Detroit has the highest rates of Internet accessibility issues out of any major city in the country.

This “digital divide,” as coined by Mark Zuckerberg, has been frequently cited as a major factor in a person’s ability to succeed. For instance, job searches have long since moved off the classifieds page and onto the Web.

Internet access is also vital in other areas of life. Currently, four out of five consumers shop on phones, making web-based retail extremely important.

Facebook’s service, Free Basics, is an effort to bring people online, especially in emerging markets where the Internet might not have been readily available.

The FCC has a similar stance on access to the Internet. It announced the National Broadband Plan, which is attempting to connect the million around the country.

The agency has said that their efforts should “stimulate economic growth, spur job creation, and boost America’s capabilities in education, health care, homeland security and more.”

Although Detroit has rebounded from the downturn in the automobile industry, with unemployment falling to 11% in February, it is still feeling the effects of the troubled economic times. With poverty still high, people aren’t always paying for Internet access.

The next move for the FCC initiative and organizations like Free Basics might be to provide free Wi-Fi hotspots. Many places in major cities like New York have funding to build free Wi-Fi hotspots for residents.

  • Tyner Family Files Lawsuit After Property Management Company Founder’s Death

Tyner Family Files Lawsuit After Property Management Company Founder’s Death

A lawsuit has been filed regarding the death of a family-owned business owner.

Herbert Tyner and his cousin/business partner, Bernard Hartman, owned and operated Hartman and Tyner Inc., a property management company, for more than 60 years.

Tyner, after suffering from an illness for a while, died in August at 84 years old. Tyner’s wife, Suzanne, is claiming that Hartman has now gone back on his promise to take care of Tyner’s family and run Hartman and Tyner Inc. just like the two founders always had.

The Detroit News reports that instead, Hartman, also 84, and vice president, Daniel K. Adkins, are extending their own salaries. The lawsuit claims that Adkins and Hartman are “lining their own pockets” by giving themselves more than a million dollars in raises and bonuses, and giving nothing to the Tyners.

While Herbert Tyner was on his deathbed, the lawsuit states that, “Mr. Hartman promised Mr. Tyner that his wife of 60 years, Suzanne Tyner, would be taken care of upon his death.”

“We will eventually respond to the complaint and deny virtually everything in it,” Adkins said.

According to LexisNexis, about 55% of Americans don’t have an active estate plan or will in place. In Tyner’s situation, much of the plan rested with his cousin and business partner, making it much more complicated.

“We believe the Tyner family has been treated fairly,” Adkins said. “We will deny all these accusations and defend ourselves vigorously.”

Since 1953 when their company began, both Tyner and Hartman split everything right down the middle. During the last few months of Tyner’s life, his daughter Deborah had power of attorney and began attempting to help her family with Tyner’s assets.

According the Daily Racing Form, Herbert Tyner received his bachelor’s degree and MBA from Ohio State University and partnered with Hartman in 1953.

Tyner was also survived by Karen Tyner Rouff, Cynthia Tyner Dobbins, and David Tyner.

Chrysler Fiat Partners With NBCUniversal to Roll Out Minivan Campaign Featuring Man’s Best Friend

As part of their second wave of marketing for the 2017 Chrysler Pacifica minivan, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles launched a new commercial during the “Today” show that puts man’s best friend front and center — or in the backseat, rather.

In a partnership with NBCUniversal, the commercial features “Late Night” host Seth Meyers and his Italian Greyhound, Frisbee, as well as a segment of the movie trailer “The Secret Life of Pets” to help promote the vehicle.

Beautiful happy reddish havanese puppy dog is sitting frontal

More than 46 million households in the U.S. have dogs, and another approximately 38 million have cats; “The Secret Life of Pets” is a digitally animated film that shows us exactly what happens after we say goodbye to our furry companions and close our doors each day. “The Secret Life of Pets” debuts in July and is expected to be one of the biggest movies of the summer.

“We are excited that we are marrying what we believe to be a big cultural hit for this summer with the power of NBC new portfolio to really give the Chrysler Pacifica mass reach for their top priority launch,” said Alison Tarrant, executive vice president of client partnerships for NBCUniversal.

The partnership is considered one of the deepest that is has ever struck with an advertiser. According to freep.com, the ads will not only air on NBC’s networks but also on BuzzFeed and Vox Media.

And just like “The Secret Life of Pets” is projected to be one of the most successful movies of the year, the Pacifica is the Detroit automaker’s most important vehicle of the year. The Pacifica effectively replaces the Chrysler Town and County minivan, a mainstay and staple for soccer moms across the country since its inception in 1989.

According to Detroitnews.com, Fiat Chrysler spent billions to retool the Pacifica, which now fits into the crossover category.

  • Detroit Metro Names New DirAirplane at the sunriseector of Public Affairs

Detroit Metro Names New DirAirplane at the sunriseector of Public Affairs

On May 2, Brain Lassaline has been named director of public affairs for Detroit Metro and Willow Run airports. Lassaline will be replacing Michael Conway, who previously held the position and is retiring after 33 years.

According to a news release from the airport authority, in his new role, Lassaline will “oversee the management of public information, media relations, customer service including the Airport Authority’s Ambassador program, internal communications, commercial filming and photography and other related operations.”

Lassaline proves to be more than qualified for the position. Previously, he has worked in the Business Development and Concessions department at the airport. Prior to that, he worked in the customer service departments of British Airways and US Airways Express and was a commuter carrier for Northwest Airlines. His educational background includes a degree in aviation management and environmental studies from Western Michigan University.

“Michael Conway has been an extraordinary teacher and mentor. More than 20 years ago, Michael gave me — a young aviation student — the opportunity to learn about airports as a public affairs intern. This is one of the most rewarding and dynamic industries to be involved in, and our Airport Authority management team works extremely hard at fostering career development opportunities for our employees,” said Lassaline. “My goal is to ensure our team continues to embrace the honest, accurate, and timely communication values Michael lived and taught our team, and share the enthusiasm we have for our airports with our customers, employees and community.”

In a given day, more than 8 million people travel by plane, many of whom do so through the services of a charter jet company. It will be up to the new director to maintain the level of service passengers are accustomed to getting at Detroit Metro as well as make improvements where need be.

“Brian has been a valued member of our leadership team, and brings a wealth of talent and experience to the position,” said Airport Authority Chief Executive Officer Thomas Naughton.
