There’s nothing quite as American as a burger. Americans scarf down burgers an average of 4.3 times a month, which breaks down to about one per week.

And one of the perks of the beloved burger, besides its melt-in-your mouth taste, is its affordability, costing between $5 and $20 on average.

But what about a $55 burger? Is it worth the big bucks?

According to Detroit critics, Townsend Hotel’s Rugby Grille $55 cheeseburger is worth every penny.

“The $55 hamburger is pretty much an opulent hamburger,” said Chef David Yopek, who is also known as the creator of the Rugby Grille Foie Burger. “We know hamburgers aren’t supposed to cost that much, but we wanted to offer something unique with great flavor. It’s gratifying and satisfying and a good conversation piece.”

And indeed, this burger says a mouthful. Sold only at dinnertime, the burger is made with Wagyu beef, and comes with a sweet onion ham, seared foie gras, braised short rib, parmesan aioli, burgundy truffles, and Thomasville tomme cheese. To make things even more decadent, the cheeseburger is served with a side of burgundy truffle fries.

According to Chef Yopek, the eight-ounce behemoth of a burger has been on the menu for three weeks and has been a hit ever since it hit the menu. The first one to taste the burger was Grace D, a well-known food blogger in the area.

“First time dining here and it was delicious,” she blogged about the Rugby Grille on Yelp. “Sat up at the bar and had a nice glass of wine with the new Foie Burger. This burger is outstanding!”

While it may seem like Yopek’s burger is a heavy contender, he promises that it’s not too heavy. In fact, he thinks it might be the best burger in Michigan.

“It’s possibly the most expensive burger in Michigan — and the tastiest,” he said.

he Detroit Police Department has reported that the body of a senior citizen has been found in a dumpster behind a long-term care facility.

Ralph Ford, 73, had been a resident of St. Francis Nursing Center on Cadillac Boulevard, but he was not reported missing until after his body was discovered.

According to Detroit’s ABC 7 News, the man was found covered in clothes. While his autopsy points to death via natural causes, the death has raised a great deal of suspicion to the point where the Detroit Police Department are conducting a thorough investigation.

On Monday, construction workers found Ford’s body. Hours later, the St. Francis Nursing Center called police to report the man as “serious missing.”

Since Monday, the nursing home has been under investigation by the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, representatives of which were seen at the facility all day Thursday. However, a spokesman with the Department declined to comment whether or not the investigation was tied to Ford’s death.

Additionally, the management at the nursing center refused to comment.

As the baby boomer generation reaches the age of retirement, the rate of assisted living care is expected to skyrocket. In fact, by 2050, the number of individuals using long term assisted living care is expected to skyrocket to 27 million people — that’s double the number of individuals recorded in 2000.

Despite these climbing numbers, the state of assisted living homes have been constantly in question, as far as level of care, sanitation, and ethics are concerned. Although many say that quality has improved at assisted living centers, reports state that these claims are largely backed by self-reported data. Meanwhile, an onslaught of negative press and disheartening stories in the news tell a completely different story.

Experts advise individuals with loved ones in nursing homes to watch out for the signs of abuse and neglect, which include sudden weight loss, bedsores, unexplained injuries, withdrawal or changes in behavior, and environmental hazards such as broken equipment or an unkempt environment.

“You like to think there’s a line between the person and the professional,” Gandhi said. “Most people become physicians because they want to help people, and obviously if something goes wrong, you feel like it’s a personal attack.”

Medical malpractice can be especially harmful in Gandhi’s field. On average, around 28,000 babies per year are born with a birth injury, or as many as three every hour, and these incidents often stem from malpractice or negligence.

Unfortunately, medical malpractice does happen more frequently then it probably should in a nation with such advancements. As the story points out, each year about 7% of physicians will have a malpractice claims against them. One of the biggest reasons comes down to basic miscommunication.

Tom Popovich is a McHenry-based attorney who hears from between 100 and 200 claims a year, but only takes one or two of them. In one of his client’s cases, a spouse was brought to the emergency room for chest pains.

The doctor in charge ordered the correct procedures to be done immediately, but for whatever reason, the orders weren’t carried out by the staff. The patient ended up dead. A tragedy, yes, but certainly not uncommon considering medical negligence is the third leading cause of death in the U.S., according to the Journal of the American Medical Association.

“It’s very hard for family members to understand that their loved one died just because of a simple miscommunication error,” Popovich said.

Another home healthcare specialist who works in the area, Dr. Kenneth Albrecht, echoed similar sentiments and credits his personal policies as a big reason he’s never been sued for malpractice.

“What I noticed [during my residency] was patients were disgusted, felt lost and treated like a number in the system, and I definitely knew that I did not want that,” Albrecht said. “I wondered ‘Why is that? Why is that?’ Medicine is so damn disorganized that it’s difficult for physicians to sort of control anything. What I knew patients really needed and what they wanted was quality time with me, not just time but quality time.”

The effectiveness of the current American education system has been under contention for many years. Even though the Pew Research Center reports that the millennial generation is the best educated as of yet, with around 34% earning at least a bachelor’s degree, we’re still finding many students don’t have the same opportunities as their peers.

According to the Lansing State Journal, teachers in the Detroit public school district saw such substantial problems with the local system, both due to improper educational practices and unsafe building conditions, that they shut down nearly 60 schools in the district with a “sickout” protest.

A group of teachers called Detroit Strikes To Win, led by ousted teachers’ union president Steve Conn, met on Sunday night to discuss not only the organized sickout protest, but even the potential for a district-wide strike in the future. This protest is based on what they are describing as, “deplorable teaching conditions.”

As a result, the Detroit Federation of Teachers held a conference to discuss the severity of the toxic environmental and learning conditions that both educators and students face in Detroit classrooms.

This protest may just have done the job, with the the Detroit Free Press reporting that Detroit will be launching inspections of all public schools after Mayor Mike Duggan visited four schools following the sickout.

“This effort isn’t about blaming anybody,” Duggan said in a statement this evening “It’s about making sure that every child and every teacher in Detroit goes to school in a safe and healthy environment.”

An initial inspection of 20 school buildings is expected to be completed by the end of the month, with all 97 schools being inspected by the end of April.

State Sen. Goeff Hansen also stated that two bills would be introduced to the legislature to address the school district’s problems and debt.

The holiday season is supposed to be a time of joyous celebration and happiness. Unfortunately for the Agosta family from Michigan, much of theirs this year has been spent in and out of an Ann Arbor hospital. That’s because their 8-year-old son, Landon, was recently diagnosed with stage three melanoma, according to Fox 2 Detroit.
