Which Wedding Trend is Out, The New Detroit Wedding Trend to Watch Out For

Beautiful wedding coupleDestination weddings are fun for everyone involved. Not only does it give guests an excuse to get away and let loose, but it makes the married couple’s special day all the more magical. And in recent years, destination weddings have become increasingly popular; in 2013, they accounted for one in four — a sharp increase from one in five in 2009.

But when it comes to destination weddings, some trends have been played out these past few years. Here are two wedding trends that have been popular as of late — one that needs to go, and one that’s here to stay.

    Barnyard Weddings are OUT
If you have attended a destination wedding in the past year or so, there’s no doubt you that have been to a barn wedding. You know the type: mason jar cocktail glasses, quirky striped paper straws, and tablecloths that look like burlap sacks because — well, because they literally are burlap sacks.

Also known as the Pinterest Wedding, this inexpensive, DIY destination wedding trend has taken the online wedding tip world by storm.

Of course, there is indeed something whimsical about this rampant wedding trend, but at this point, the haystack used as our dining table seat is making us itch. The barnyard wedding has seen its hayday, and it might be time to send it out to pasture.

    Historical Detroit Weddings are IN
While barnyard weddings are tired, there’s one up and coming wedding trend that still conveys a sense of vintage whimsy. Historical destination weddings are becoming an increasingly popular way to tie the knot in an unconventional setting.

Many couples are getting hitched in unique and historical settings that evoke intrigue of the past.

Take Jackie Wing and Mark Prindiville, for example. The native Detroit couple shares a love for history — particularly Detroit’s history.

Because of this, the two chose to tie the knot at the Ford Piquette Avenue Plant, where Henry Ford first manufactured the Model T. The location was unique and vintage, and provided ample interest for the history nerds and their guests.

And they aren’t the only ones taking advantage of Detroit’s long-standing history. From Detroit’s historic churches to the Belle Isle Casino, couples are basking in Detroit’s past while they exchange vows.

This celebration of Detroit’s roots also signifies a newfound relationship with a city that has been through a great deal.

  • Voting Is Open To Find the Most Iconic Detroit Landmark for Legoland’s Motor City Miniland

Voting Is Open To Find the Most Iconic Detroit Landmark for Legoland’s Motor City Miniland

Downtown DetroitThe Legoland Discovery Center Michigan will be opening next spring at Great Lakes Crossing Outlets, but before that can happen, there’s one pressing matter to attend to: Voters must decide which Detroit landmarks will be featured in the 32,000-square-foot “mini Detroit” built entirely out of LEGO bricks.

According to Curbed Detroit and Crain’s Detroit Business, the store will feature several local landmarks, buildings, and attractions, all built from the colorful little bricks; there will a few rounds of voting and then one final winner will be determined, before the store opens in 2016.

Legoland is asking fans to submit suggestions of iconic Detroit landmarks through a written form on the official Facebook page — and considering that it only takes about 10 seconds for visitors to form full opinions based solely on visual designs, it’s definitely important that locals submit suggestions for Miniland Detroit that truly represent the heart and culture of the real city.

Submissions opened on Oct. 12, via Legoland’s Facebook page, and will be accepted through Oct. 26. The top 10 submissions will be announced on Oct. 28 and then another round of voting will be held from Nov. 2-16 to determine the winning landmark.

The top landmark will be announced on Nov. 18, and then the Legoland experts will get to work on construction. When the Legoland Discovery Center Michigan finally opens next spring, visitors can expect to see their favorite Detroit landmark featured front and center in Motor City Miniland.

“We are thrilled to invite Lego fans and members of the public to participate in creating our very own Miniland exhibit,” said general manager Hayley Anderson in a recent press release.

“We know that the completed Miniland will be a spectacular showpiece that represents the places we love most about metro Detroit and Michigan, and will inspire families and visitors from across the region.”

  • New Research Suggests Childhood Obesity Starts at Home

New Research Suggests Childhood Obesity Starts at Home

Children Diet ProblemsMany parents believe that their children are in a healthy weight range. But according to new research, these parents’ perceptions are wrong — perhaps dangerously so.

Earlier this fall, a large national study was published in the journal Childhood Obesity, which studied the perception of parents with obese and overweight children. According to the study, 78% of parents who had an obese child perceived their child to be the right weight. In 1994, 71% fewer parents felt their children were at the right weight, and correctly sized up the state of their child’s health at a glance.

So what does this shift mean? It’s important to note because it majorly influences whether or not healthy behaviors are being fostered in the home.

It is also important to recognize that this shift in perception also coincides with a dramatic increase in child obesity. According to the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC), approximately 17% of children and adolescents between the ages of two and 19 are obese. This is an increase of 5% since 1974.

This overall shift in both child obesity rates and parents’ perception of childhood obesity suggests that a new norm is taking hold in America, in both household habits and weight. People are growing larger, and it is often due to large portions, large amounts of refined carbohydrates, sugars, and fats, and a lack of exercise.

Generally speaking, children should get 60 minutes or more of exercise per day, yet only 25% of all children in the U.S. get the exercise needed.

Increased childhood obesity rates doesn’t only mean a higher likelihood of adulthood obesity — it beckons a myriad of health risks.

In the past, high blood pressure was only a concern for adults. But recently, researchers at the Nemours Foundation found that one in 25 teenagers has high blood pressure.

One of the biggest risk factors for children developing elevated blood pressure levels is excessive internet use.

A study at Detroit’s Henry Ford Hospital found that teens who spend at least 14 hours a week on the internet tended to have higher blood pressure levels.

This suggests that home habits are becoming more sedentary. These are the three-quarters of children who get less than 60 minutes of exercise per day.

If parents want to change the fate of their child’s health and future, change needs to start at home.

  • Mobile Dental Clinic Helps Keep Detroit Children’s Teeth Healthy

Mobile Dental Clinic Helps Keep Detroit Children’s Teeth Healthy

Gloved hand holding dental tool to teeth x-rayAcross the country, lack of childhood dental care remains a pervasive issue. In fact, studies show that children nationwide lose a stunning 51 million hours of school annually due to untreated dental problems.

To give Detroit children better access to the dental care they need, a customized bus is now traveling across the area, providing comprehensive dental services to underprivileged kids.

According to Crain’s Detroit Business, the University of Detroit Mercy (UDM)’s new dental coach is now traveling across Wayne County, providing dental care and education to children at schools across the county.

The mobile dental clinic has four portable treatment chairs for patients, X-ray equipment, a sterilization unit and a digital imaging system. UDM dental students and faculty will administer treatments to children, which will include preventive exams, cleanings, X-rays, sealants, restorative work, tooth extractions, emergency services and more.

The bus will make its first stop at Noble Elementary-Middle School in Detroit, where it will remain for two weeks. During this time, more than 50 children are expected to be treated at this school alone.

When 99.7% — virtually all — of Americans agree that one’s smile is one of the most important social assets one can have, maintaining a healthy, beautiful set of teeth from childhood to adulthood is more essential than ever. Additionally, children with healthy teeth are less likely to miss school, improving their educational experience. That’s why UDM’s mobile clinic is so important, said Mert Aksu, the UDM dental school’s dean.

“Not only will this mobile unit provide a unique experience for University of Detroit Mercy dental students, it also will address the access-to-care issue in the city of Detroit by facilitating dental treatment to a population that likely would not otherwise receive it,” Aksu said.

By the end of the school year, the mobile clinic will have provided dental care to approximately 1,600 children.

  • Why Did This Detroit Non-Profit Release 85,000 Worms on Purpose?

Why Did This Detroit Non-Profit Release 85,000 Worms on Purpose?

Picturesque landscape, fenced ranch at sunriseDetroit has its fair share of problems, and like many American cities, it struggles to cope with an aging urban infrastructure. Now, Detroit citizen Wade Rose has an interesting idea for saving the city’s overburdened sewer system. He’s using worms.

Under Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, the city has already launched several innovative programs designed to help residents recover from the economic recession. The city has offered zero-interest home-improvement loans, helped citizens get mortgages on vacant homes, and encouraged minority-owned businesses. But how can worms help the city get back on its feet?

To help raise money for infrastructure repairs, earlier this year the city of Detroit transferred control of its 100-year-old water and sewer system to The Great Lakes Water Authority, which will pay the city $50 million per year. However, Detroit will still retain ownership of its aging water system, which includes 3,000 miles of pipe and sees about 2,000 water main breaks a year, almost one break for every mile of pipe.

Consumer advocate Angie Hicks recommends that homeowners inspect sewer lines in homes more than 40 years old, but the number of vacant and foreclosed homes in the city makes that unlikely. To make matters worse, the high number of vacant lots in the city overtaxes the sewer system. So when it rains, compacted soil on vacant lots leads to water pollution that puts too much stress on the downtown water treatment facility. So Wade Rose had a strange, but brilliant idea.

“By loosening up this compacted soil, through using trees, native plants and worms, we’re actually stopping it from flowing in and then inundating the water treatment facility downtown, so we’re basically stopping water pollution before it even starts,” Rose said.

Rose works with a non-profit called Greening of Detroit, and last week the group released 85,000 worms on the lot. And after a week of heavy rain, the group didn’t find any worms on nearby sidewalks. By Spring 2016, the group plans to release thousands of worms on 31 more vacant lots. The worms were purchased from a worm farm in Pennsylvania.
