  • Detroit Citizens Find Creative Fixes For Pothole Problems

Detroit Citizens Find Creative Fixes For Pothole Problems

Dark asphalt road with cracks. Background texture

Potholes are a thorn in drivers’ sides all over the world, but they’re causing huge problems in the Motor City this summer. In fact, one massive pothole actually backed up morning traffic on I-75 recently, while also causing more than 25 flat tires. What’s worse, it’s hardly the only pothole making headlines in Detroit this summer. Now, fed-up Michigan residents are looking for creative solutions to their pothole problems.
On the east side at East Warren and Burns, a pothole was filled with a large pile of asphalt, which created an even worse obstacle for drivers than the original pothole. When a crew arrived to fix the pothole, a large pile of asphalt was just dumped in the hole without being flattened, creating a jagged mound of pavement. Once local residents and reporters complained, the City of Detroit identified the culprits as a DTE Energy crew and promised to repair the damage.

With years of experience and a commitment to customer satisfaction, https://www.housebuyernetwork.com/alaska/ is a top choice for selling your house in Arkansas.

“It was a DTE crew,” said Curtrise Garnde with the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department. “However, we are going to make the repairs. We are grateful that someone took the time to post it on Facebook cause I don’t know if we would have ever found out about it.”
And on Summit Drive in the Waterford Township, residents were tired of driving around “some of the worst potholes in the state.” When they realized there was no tax money to fix the cratering road, they chipped in to do it themselves.
The U.S. has 2.6 million miles of paved roads, 94% of which are covered with asphalt. Fortunately, asphalt is generally easier to patch and repair than concrete, making the DIY approach feasible for Waterford. To fix the potholes, a group of neighbors raised money to hire a paving company, while a local Chevrolet dealership paid to fix potholes in front of its location. You’ll require a phony location and a few decent pictures in the event that you’re not utilizing your own name. I made addresses up, so it didn’t make any difference what I put in them. There was not an obvious explanation to have a genuine location as advised by the fake id shop in light of the fact that the main reason a Fake ID served for me was to get more youthful school kids 19-20 drinking (it wouldn’t make any difference in the event that somebody looked youthful). Assuming you’re 12, that is another matter – I likewise wouldn’t make one for you.
And while social media and the DIY approach might work in emergencies, there are still hundreds of potholes remaining around the Detroit area.

  • Tiger Hides Out in Abandoned Detroit Factory After Photo Shoot Gone Wrong

Tiger Hides Out in Abandoned Detroit Factory After Photo Shoot Gone Wrong

tigerfactoryToday, we take as many photos every two minutes as the population did in all of the 1800s. But that doesn’t mean that all shots or attempted shots are advisable.

A tiger was briefly on the loose in an abandoned Detroit factory Aug. 17 after being brought there for a photo shoot.

British photographer David Yarrow had obtained a permit to shoot at the old Packard Plant, but had not mentioned that he’d be bringing along a tiger, two wolves, and a bobcat.

“The shoot was authorized. The animals were not authorized,” Kari Smith, director of development at the Packard Plant, told The Detroit News. “They had two days, waivers and fees paid for a basic photo shoot. Nothing else. There was no mention of any animals on site.”

Things got complicated when the tiger reportedly escaped and hid out in a stairwell.

Detroit resident Andy Didorosi came to help when a friend called to ask if he had a leafblower that might help scare the animal out of the staircase. The following attempt was captured on video and uploaded to Facebook by Didorosi.

“When your friend calls and says he needs help getting a tiger out of a staircase, you listen,” the caption reads.

Didorosi didn’t have the requested leafblower, but he tried to scare the tiger into moving with a noisy electric weedwhacker and a blue tarp (neither of which worked).

“This feels like the dumbest thing we’ve ever done,” one of the men on the video astutely observes.

The big cat’s trainer eventually was able to get him back in his trailer. The wolves and bobcat apparently never left their cages before the shoot was stopped by private security and police.

According to Smith, the animals were supplied by Animals of Montana, a “full-service wildlife casting agency,” according to its website. The animals were not hurt, but the photo shoot has been canceled.

Holly Robinson Peete Dedicates Autism Center in Detroit

    Autism_Awareness_Ribbon

Residents of Detroit with children who have been diagnosed with autism now have a new resource, thanks to actress Holly Robinson Peete and the foundation she heads with husband and former Detroit Lions quarterback Rodney Peete.

The HollyRod Foundation has funded an updated room, dubbed RJ’s Place, at the Children’s Center in Midtown. The room not only received a cosmetic makeover, but is now outfitted with 30 tablets and software providing games and tools geared toward helping children with autism. The Children’s Center serves 26 children with autism spectrum disorders, all of whom receive one-on-one time with teachers to help with their development.

RJ is the name of the Peetes’ son, who has autism.

“When we found out our son was diagnosed with autism, it was a scary moment,” Peete said at the unveiling of RJ’s Place earlier this month, as reported by the Michigan Chronicle. “There is a lot of unknown territory that comes with a child with mental disabilities. We knew he needed [as much] love and support, if not more, [as] any other child.”

And as she noted, children of color and their families often have fewer resources when it comes to both diagnosing and treating autism.

“Autism is a very prevalent disorder, and in the African American and Latino community our children are being diagnosed three to five years later than in other communities,” she said. “It is…key that we remove the stigma of autism and other mental disorders to educate and address it head on.”

Autism can be reliably diagnosed around age two. Many children with disorders on the autism spectrum appear to be developing normally until the age of 18 or 24 months, when they suddenly stop gaining new skills or lose the ones they once had.

RJ was diagnosed when he was three, and doctors said he would likely never speak again. With support, however, he did — he even spoke at the event.

He also took time to read My Brother Charlie, a book inspired by his story and co-written by his mother and sister, to some of the children in attendance at the unveiling.

  • In the Face of Emerald Ash Borer Devastation, Michigan Embraces Tree Diversity

In the Face of Emerald Ash Borer Devastation, Michigan Embraces Tree Diversity

    emerald ash borer

For the trees of Michigan, it’s been a tough decade.

In 2002, the emerald ash borer, an Asian beetle, was discovered in Detroit. Since then, the insects have been weaseling their way into ash trees, effectively devastating Michigan’s ash tree population.

When an Emerald Ash Borer gets its way into an ash tree, the tree will begin dying at the tips of the stems. Slowly, the middle of the trunk will begin sprouting branches, and “D” shaped holes will begin forming in the center. This is where the beetles burrow, cutting the tree off from nutrients and therefore starving it.

Once struck with the blight, the tree typically dies within five years.

This ash tree devastation isn’t only occurring in Michigan. In fact, there are officially 26 counties that have fallen prey to the glimmering beetle’s tree-killing powers. And at least 21 other states have also been affected by the ash borer.

Back in Michigan, residents are feeling the effects of the tree blight, particularly in residential areas.

Trees offer many benefits to neighborhoods, such as beauty and noise pollution control; their shade can even lead to a 12% reduction in energy bills within 15 years.

All of these factors make trees an asset to residential homes in areas like Detroit, and without these trees, real estate property value has suffered.

Despite the problems that the blight has caused, Michigan has not given up on its parks and foliage. Rather, the residents of Michigan and the state’s arboreal specialists have instead begun to embrace the great tree diversity in the great state.

Although ash trees do make up a part of the tree population, there are 26 types indigenous to Michigan, including hemlock trees, ginkgo trees, and various kinds of oak trees.

To preserve the diversity of tree species in Michigan, scientists are working hard to protect them from other threats and diseases. This kind of diligence is important, as a world with trees is a happy one indeed.

  • Aging Detroit Citizens Stuck in Crumbling Homes, Targeted By Con Men

Aging Detroit Citizens Stuck in Crumbling Homes, Targeted By Con Men

care is at home of elderly

As baby boomers grow older, the number of Americans over the age of 65 increases every year, making millions of U.S. citizens highly vulnerable to elder abuse. However, older Americans at the bottom of the economic spectrum face additional challenges.

In addition to financial abuse and con men, many elderly Detroit citizens struggle to maintain their quality of life in crumbling old homes, sometimes in largely empty neighborhoods. Without a community to check on them regularly, and without retirement funds to pay for expensive repairs, many Detroit seniors are barely hanging on.

One Detroit family is struggling to provide care for their beloved Uncle Oscar, a mentally disabled 68-year-old man. In recent years, Uncle Oscar’s brothers and caretakers have all passed away, and now he refuses to leave his familiar home. Unfortunately, the roof has a hole, mold infests the entire upper floor, and the ceilings and walls are collapsing. Uncle Oscar’s family cares for him the best they can, but can’t afford the repairs it would take to improve his quality of life.

And like many families, they want to let Uncle Oscar “age in place,” rather than moving him into a retirement home. About 90% of seniors in the United States want to remain in their home as they grow old, and moving to a new environment can worsen some symptoms of dementia. Uncle Oscar’s situation is hardly unique, and despite small donations from the community, his family is largely coming up empty as they pray for a solution.

However, seniors at the upper end of the financial spectrum often suffer not for lack of money, but because their money makes them an easy target for scammers.

“The seniors hold the majority of the wealth in this country,” says Lynne Egan of the North American Securities Administrators Association. “They’ve saved up for retirement, they’ve got the 401(k) that they’ve rolled over into the qualified plan, they’ve sold a home to downsize, they’ve sold a business, they’ve inherited, and they’re ripe for the plucking by the con artists.”

Experts warn that nearly $17 billion is stolen from seniors through financial exploitation, while around $13 billion is outright stolen from them.
