  • Ford, GM Experiment With Uber-Like Mobile Apps

Ford, GM Experiment With Uber-Like Mobile Apps

    multitasking in hands

In Detroit and around the world, automakers are struggling to maintain sales in the face of new competition from mobile services like Lyft and Uber. These ride-sharing startups have spread quickly in most major American cities, connecting consumers to drivers accepting fares through the services. Then there’s startups like RelayRides, which allow people to rent vehicles for short periods of time.

All these startups have one thing in common — they make it easier to function in the United States without owning a car. That makes companies like Ford and General Motors very nervous. Now, those companies are experimenting with similar crowdsourced services to make up for losses to digital competitors.

Experts say mobile apps like Uber will only become more popular in the years to come. Increasingly, U.S. consumers access the Web through their smartphones, and mobile advertising revenue will more than triple in size by next year.

This June, Ford began testing a car-sharing program that would allow Ford buyers an easy way to rent out their cars. The Ford pilot program is modeled off yet another crowdsourcing app, Airbnb, and the automaker has called it the “Smart Mobility Plan.” The six month program will be limited to Ford customers in Berkeley, Oakland, San Francisco, Portland, Chicago, and Washington D.C.

Then there’s General Motors, which recently launched a mobile app of their own in Germany. GM’s CarUnity app allows car owners to rent their ride to friends or customers in the app network.

Thilo Koslowski, vice president at research firm Gartner Inc., says that a decade from now, at least 20% of urban cars will be shared between drivers.

“This is a big bang moment for the auto industry,” Koslowski said. “Imagine all of a sudden 20% of your vehicles sales in the classic sense — to individuals who will be the only user of that car — go away.”

The market for car ownership in developing countries will offset losses in Europe and the United States, for now. But experts say that for every one vehicle dedicated to a car sharing or short-term rental service like Lyft or ZipCar, between four and six new car sales disappear.

Water Pressure: City of Flint to Install New Carbon Water Filter

    background of water pipeline

Within the next few weeks, the city of Flint, MI plans to install a new $1.6 million carbon water filtration system into its water system, a move that officials say could cut an entire class of pollutants from local drinking water.

According to a July 9 MLive.com article, the granulated carbon filter media installation will remove total trihalomethanes (TTHM) from the city’s tap water.

Experts estimate that there are more than 2,100 known contaminants that can potentially be present in tap water. TTHM, a byproduct of chlorine, is also a widely-known carcinogen and has been linked with a number of other health problems.

Doughtery Johnson, Flint’s utilities administrator, has called the filtration system “somewhat of a miracle worker.”

“This is kind of a magic bullet,” Johnson said of the system when installation began last month.

TTHM has been a major concern among residents of Flint due to high levels of the chemical being present in its drinking water. The city has been in violation of the Safe Drinking Water Act since the beginning of the year.

In a cost-cutting move, the city of Flint began sourcing its water from the Flint River last year after it stopped using Detroit’s water system. Since the transition, some residents have made complaints about their drinking water’s smell, taste and appearance, the Detroit Free Press reported. On Friday, July 10, Flint residents held a downtown rally to protest the ongoing water problems.

Because violations are based on a 12-month average, Flint is technically still in violation of the law, despite the fact that recent tests revealed TTHM content below the maximum level. Xanax and its analogues should not be taken with alcohol and drugs containing ethanol. Their interaction leads to hallucinations, depression of consciousness, coma. Read more at https://www.sdarcwellness.com/xanax-alprazolam-online-1-mg/. Currently, city and state Department of Environmental Quality officials say that the tap water is safe to drink, although those who have infant children or who are elderly may want to exercise caution.

Oldest And Newest Buildings In Detroit Side By Side In Corktown

    oldest building in detroit

    UPDATED 8/21/20

In the Corktown district downtown, the old and new Detroit sit side by side.

Quicken Loans Inc. opened a high-tech new server center in Corktown at the end of June. Inside, the building is home to 400 servers, two power generators creating 2.5 megawatts of energy, and modern amenities like sleeping pods. Outside, the building features large panes of glass walls and refurbished metal siding.

“We’re still connected to downtown and it’s in Detroit, where we made a commitment to,” said Adam McLaughlin, Quicken director of IT.

But around the corner you’ll find one of the oldest structures in all of Detroit — a plain, over-sized shed that once played a humble role in the birth of the labor movement. In modern times, 77% of Americans just use sheds for storing garden tools, but in the 1840s this Corktown building housed Irish immigrants and laborers. As many as 10 laborers were stuffed into a single room in this rundown shed.

In the mornings, they would go to work to one of Detroit’s many factories. Now, more than 150 years later, a neighborhood group called the Corktown Experience is working to save the historic building as a cultural site.

commercial business building“We are dedicated to making it respectful of the neighborhood, to enhance education about the neighborhood’s history and make it a gathering place for the community,” said Tim McKay, president of the Corktown Experience. “We have the opportunity to do this project right, without it being dull…It’s an economic development tool that will utilize the history of Corktown to attract business and tourists.”

Corktown has been undergoing a sudden surge in redevelopment and interest over the past few years, attracting both businesses like Quicken and hip young residents to its cultural scene, a far cry from its origins as a home for factory workers.

“This neighborhood is getting its time to shine again,” said Socrates Apallas, board member of the Corktown Residents and Business Association. “A rebirth, almost.”

Building premises to rentAfter weathering a bankruptcy in 2013, Detroit has recently been reborn as leaner and ready for development. With investments for new construction rolling in, led by Detroit’s own Dan Gilbert, the site of old run down structures next to brand new commercial property space is not unusual. Detroit has faced a property reckoning in recent years. With the sudden population boom happening when the auto industry took off after World War II and the even more sudden population retraction after the plants started to close, many buildings, and even neighborhoods, have been left dormant for years.

In order to bring people back downtown, building premises to rent has been a high priority. Having safe and modern buildings near amenities is critical to enticing young people to repopulate Detroit. Investing in commercial property space is bringing new business downtown and building premises to rent provides living space for a whole new generation of Detroiters. Commercial builders and fresh investment has been key to Detroit’s recent rebirth.

  • Detroit’s Only Elder Abuse Shelter Flooded With Calls

Detroit’s Only Elder Abuse Shelter Flooded With Calls

    Happy Telephone Operators

Michigan nonprofit Jewish Senior Life opened a shelter for victims of elder abuse last week in Oakland County, and staff say the phone is already “ringing off the hook” with callers in need of help.

“We’ve had anything from veterans, to people living with their own children, to people who want to volunteer their time or donate,” said Rochelle Upfal, CEO of Jewish Senior Life. “It’s a hidden epidemic because this [problem] hasn’t been discussed openly.”

Experts say elder abuse is vastly under-reported, and includes everything from financial exploitation to physical abuse. In 2014, the state’s Adult Protective Services investigated 13,511 complaints of elder abuse, but advocates say far more aging Americans are likely abused in Michigan each year.

Nationwide, about 1.6 million Americans live in more than 17,000 nursing homes, and experts say the elderly are abused in one out of every three nursing homes. One study found that between January 1999 and January 2001, 5,283 facilities were cited for about 9,000 elder abuse complaints.

Upfal says the high demand at the new Elder Abuse Prevention at Jewish Senior Life shelter shows that the issue has since reached crisis levels. The new shelter is open to people of all faiths and is the first of its kind in Michigan.

Seniors who are sent to the shelter will be taken in by one of four retirement homes run by the nonprofit, and will live free of charge among other residents.

“For us, it is using our existing retirement community where they have access to safe housing and a social worker until they either can go back home or find suitable housing,” Upfal said.

The new program also received a $25,000 grant from the state government. To learn more information about the new shelter, or to report elder abuse, Michigan residents can call the shelter’s 24/7 hotline at (248) 661-0123.

  • Broken Fire Hydrants Becoming a Big Issue in Detroit

Broken Fire Hydrants Becoming a Big Issue in Detroit

    Fire alarm
Fires in Detroit have become increasingly worse and dangerous, as a number of fire hydrants in the city are broken. The neglect of these fire hydrants seriously affects the efficiency of the Detroit Fire Department, which is one of the busiest in the country.

A local man by the name of Steve Neavling founded a website called the Motor City Muckraker, and he is now fighting with city hall to fix this issue. He is using his site to track every fire in the city this year, and the biggest find has been the broken fire hydrants around the city. Because of these broken fire hydrants, fires grow into more uncontrollable situations while firefighters search for a working hydrant.

There are areas right in downtown Detroit and its historic districts that have two or more blocks in a row with no working fire hydrants. By the time firefighters were to get to one that works and set up the equipment needed to reach back to the house, the building would likely already be a total loss. This is a violation of federal laws, which dictate that hydrants must be located within 500 feet of a house, not to mention the extreme danger it poses.

When Neavling brought this issue to the town hall, they told him there were http://www.minale.com.au/buy-cialis-tadalafil-online/ only 70 broken hydrants in the city. Skeptical, he conducted his own research. After surveying 15% of the 30,000 hydrants in Detroit, he found 279 broken hydrants. If you were to take that number and use it to estimate the number throughout the whole city, it works out to an estimated 1,800 broken hydrants.

An even bigger issue within Neavling’s research is the stubbornness of City Hall, which will not admit that there is an issue, nor help him with his research. He filed a Freedom of Information request, which was denied because the city said releasing that information would be too dangerous. If arsonists knew where the broken fire hydrants were, they would have the perfect target. Now, Neavling is suing them for the information.

The poorest neighborhoods are the ones most at risk from this issue.

Homeowners are encouraged to practice good fire safety in their homes. Make sure you don’t leave anything plugged in, and if you haven’t replaced your smoke detector lately, you probably should. They should be replaced based on the recommendation of the manufacturer, or at least once every 10 years. Families should have an evacuation plan in place, including a location to meet up after leaving the home during a fire or other emergency, and they should practice evacuating.
