United Nations Prepares to Send Envoys to Detroit as Residents Decry Human Rights Violations

    leaking elbow

The Great Recession marked a turning point for a lot of cities across the United States. For Detroit, the economic downturn served as the final nail in the coffin of the once-great city. The government bailout managed to prop up the American automakers who still called the city home, but by 2013, as USA Today reports, Detroit could no longer survive on its traditional industry alone. In July of that year, the city filed for Chapter 9 bankruptcy protection.

To say that Detroit and its residents have struggled for the last year and a half would be a massive understatement. The formerly proud metropolis has been deadened with ever expanding blight and an unemployment rate that the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics puts at 17.7%. As if that’s not bad enough, Detroiters now accuse the city of human rights violations, as the city has been shutting down water connections to save money and avoid potential health problems. In response, the United Nations is now prepping a team of human rights experts to head into the fallen city, both to assess the validity of the claims and to try and solve the ongoing water crisis.

Water Problems Disproportionately Affect Low-Income Detroiters

At the beginning of October, Lansing State Journal reported on a Detroit café that was relying on water taken directly from a fire hydrant to keep its doors open. The city had shut off the connection to the area of the city where the coffeehouse is located. The series of jury-rigged hoses pumping the water from the fire hydrant outside into the café were, surprisingly, not set up by the proprietor, but by the City of Detroit.

Deadline Detroit reports that the city announced at the beginning of the month that a number of water connections would be shut down, as the city pushed to fix a water main that was leaking high volumes of water. Detroit officials, already struggling to find cash for a slew of necessary infrastructural improvements, made the decision to close the connections to save the city money and to avoid public health issues. Mold, which can cause a range of health problems , from allergies to asthma, was just one of the threats the city hoped to avoid.

When the UN team arrives in Detroit on October 18, it’s said that the first move will be to assess how bad the city’s problems truly are, specifically in how they affect the city’s low-income population. Thousands of Detroiters have lost access to water, both as a result of inability to pay and the city cutting off access as part of the ongoing repairs. The UN investigators are charged with ascertaining whether or not public outcry that the issue is a human rights violation disproportionately affecting low-income Detroiters is valid. From there, the team is expected to release a report summarizing their findings and recommendations to the City of Detroit.

Do you think the United Nations should step in to help solve Detroit’s water crisis? Tell us why or why not in the comments below.

Construction Teams Work With Developers To Protect Iconic Macomb Mall Sign

    Updated 12/9/20

Commercial home renovation can help with home sales. The home renovation basics will be the same at most properties. A home renovation team can substantially change the appearance of any house. Some people might just be interested in improving the structures of the house that currently exist. Other individuals might want to add to the house in a more substantial way. They can get ideas from different house addition designs.

It’s common to add another bedroom to a house. Adding another bedroom is easier than adding another bathroom. People won’t usually have to change the house’s plumbing to make that addition possible. Another bedroom can also make a house dramatically more valuable. Potential buyers often specifically search for homes based on the number of rooms that they have. People might be able to make numerous compromises regarding the homes that they purchase, but they usually won’t be able to choose a house with fewer rooms.

Bedrooms can have several very different layouts, which makes it easier to add them to an existing house. Living rooms usually have to have a particular shape and size, but this isn’t true for bedrooms. House makeover companies can help people successfully add to the houses that are being renovated.

Roseville’s Macomb Mall has recently entered the next stage of its multi-million dollar renovation project, with construction crews continuing their work on both the interior and exterior of the mall, while expanding construction to begin renovations on the mall’s main sign, which CBS Detroit reporter Edward Cardenas calls “iconic” and “space-age.”

The 50-year-old mall, which spans approximately 930,000 square feet, was a bubbling center of activity in the Detroit suburb when it was built during the 1960s; the huge $8 million project is meant to bring life back into the shopping center, and the fact that renovations seem to be following the initial project timeline is giving hope to developers and city officials. If everything continues as planned, the entire mall renovation will be completed mid-2015, and developers have already secured spots for high-profile stores like Dick’s Sporting Goods and L.A. Fitness.

Although The Detroit News originally stated that the mall’s famous sign, reportedly nicknamed “The Iconic,” would not be part of the renovations, CBS Detroit published an article just days afterward saying that minor changes would be made to the beloved landmark; it appears that the developers are well aware of the community’s attachment to the Macomb Mall sign, and they are “respectfully” updating the sign’s store plates.

A representative for Lormax Stern, the new company that owns the mall, has stated that concern about the sign appears to have taken center stage in community discussions regarding the renovations. While some view the sign as “old and tired,” hindering the development of a modern mall, others believe that the sign is “iconic and important.”

It isn’t uncommon for communities to struggle to find a balance between modern and traditional designs for large projects, but luckily, it appears that the developers have been able to find a middle ground for this particular project. Many construction products have been developed in recent years in response to this struggle, and something like a UV-protective coating on the Macomb Mall sign will be able to provide maximum weather protection without altering the aesthetic qualities of the sign.

Hopefully, the developers’ success with the town’s beloved sign will be indicative of the new mall’s entire success — it certainly seems like the community of Roseville is more than ready for a renewed interest in its retail industry.

Lots of people are currently planning home renovation projects. Creating home renovation drawings during the planning stage can help improve the entire house remodeling process. While people may be able to imagine what they want their homes to look like once the home revamp procedure has been completed, they need to make sure that they have realistic goals.

Even the people who follow through with their home restoration and design plans may not be satisfied with their work, in spite of the fact that nothing went wrong. They may have just imagined everything working out slightly differently. People may be able to avoid that situation by creating drawings.

The finished room or rooms might not perfectly match the drawings, of course. However, people will at least have an idea of how the home improvement project will turn out when everything is finished. As long as they plan everything carefully, the drawings can at least help them stay organized.

When these sorts of projects become complicated enough, people can also sometimes find it difficult to stay motivated. Looking at detailed drawings of home improvement projects can help people stay focused. Their finished homes will seem more real to them when they have those drawings.

  • The Spotlight is on Local Religious Leaders in Oxygen’s “Preachers of Detroit”

The Spotlight is on Local Religious Leaders in Oxygen’s “Preachers of Detroit”

    Church

Detroit’s religious communities are the latest addition to Oxygen’s reality show lineup.

Filming just kicked off for “Preachers of Detroit,” which is planned to premiere in Winter 2015 as a spinoff to the cable network’s highly popular “Preachers of L.A.” series.

According to a statement from Oxygen, “The series will focus on powerful themes of faith, family, and friendship as these seven men and women of the cloth share their lives, transformations and triumphs in and out of the pulpit in Detroit, Michigan.”

The men and women of Detroit’s religious ministry who will be featured in the series include Bishops Charles Ellis and Corletta Vaughn of Greater Grace Temple and Go Tell It Ministry, respectively, and Bishop-elect Clarence Langston of the Word in Action Christian Center, all located in Detroit. Also included are Pastors David Bullock of Greater St. Matthew Baptist Church in Highland Park and Don Shelby of Burning Bush International Ministries in Ypsilanti.

Gospel singer and evangelist Dorinda Clark-Cole from the Grammy-winning Clark Sisters will also appear, along with Pastor Tim Alden, who works at the City of Praise Christian Church in Los Angeles but returns home to Detroit frequently.

“As different as they are, they all have a huge commitment not just to God, but to Detroit,” said Rod Aissa, Oxygen’s new executive vice president of original programming and development.

Members of the reality show’s crew have local ties as well. Lemuel Plummer, the founder and CEO of L. Plummer Media (which produces both “Preachers of Detroit,” and “Preachers of L.A.”) is originally from Detroit. His father, Rev. Glenn Plummer of Redford’s Ambassadors for Christ Church, also has ties to Christian TV in the area.

The show is part of Oxygen’s rebrand to focus on reality shows. “The Wilkersons,” another show in the lineup, will focus on the pastor who officiated the marriage of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West. Since 30% of brides take 7 to 12 months to plan their weddings, however, it’s likely the show will focus on other aspects of the pastor’s life.

Oxygen has attracted its fair share of controversy for combining religion and reality TV, but “Preachers of L.A.” quickly became Oxygen’s most-watched new series for viewers in the 25-to-54 age demographic.

An exact debut date for “Preachers of Detroit” has not been announced.

  • How to Protect Your Home From this Winter’s Polar Vortex

How to Protect Your Home From this Winter’s Polar Vortex

Man Cleaning GuttersA new study on the effects of global warming may mean that the Polar Vortex that brought freezing temperatures to many parts of North America last winter is here to stay. The study, conducted by American and Korean scientists, points to the melting ice caps as the reason for freezing winter temperatures. As warm water from the Gulf Stream warms the normally freezing waters of the Arctic, the Arctic ice caps melt, causing the northern jet stream to push cold air further south into the U.S. and Canada. What’s the bottom line? Global warming means colder winters and more snow are the new norm.

Many remember the record-breaking temperatures of last winter and seemingly endless snowfall, and aren’t looking forward to another winter like it this year. The Polar Vortex may be here to stay, but there are still some things homeowners can do to make the winter months a little more bearable for themselves and their homes.

With warm weather still lingering in many parts of the country, now is the ideal time to get outside and prepare your home for the cold winter ahead. With the cold weather comes snow and ice, and houses that are not ready to handle them may face expensive repairs.

The roof, gutters and caulking are all important parts of the house to inspect before the cold comes. You can visually check your roof for signs of damage by making sure there are no holes or loose shingles. Depending on how much snow you usually get, your roof may have to hold a lot of snow that builds up over the winter. Fixing a damaged roof now will prevent water from leaking in and damaging your ceiling once the flurries start to fly.

It is also wise to check gutters for debris, like leaves and twigs, that build up over the summer and fall. This is important, to ensure that melting snow drains properly through your gutter system, instead of sitting in the gutters and causing water damage.

Check the caulking around the windows and doors of your home, as well. Caulking that is damaged, or missing altogether, can allow cold air into your home. Effective caulking can also save you money on energy costs, as an added bonus.

Weatherizing your home is important for preventing major damage from snow and ice and for keeping the cold air out, but it is essential to continue maintenance even during the winter months. Preventing large icicles from forming along gutters can keep the gutters from getting damaged or falling off your house, and shoveling snow from the foundation of your house also prevents water damage in the basement.

Don’t wait until it’s too late to get your home ready for the cold months ahead. This winter is shaping up to be another cold and snowy season, but preparing your home for the damaging effects of the Polar Vortex can make it a little more tolerable.

Dental Patient Pinned Against Wall After Car Crashes Into Office in City Outside of Detroit

    Car crash

With over 20% of adults between the ages of 20 and 64 suffering from untreated tooth decay, attending regular dental checkups is an important part of keeping up good dental hygiene. For one Novi, MI resident, however, his recent visit to the dentist turned into a nightmare after he was pinned against the wall when an SUV crashed through the office.

The recent accident was caused by an elderly patient who was on her way to the James C. Ross Family, Cosmetic and Laser Dentistry office for a dental visit when she lost control of the vehicle and drove into the outside wall of the office. Her car pinned a man, who was in the middle of dental procedure, up against the wall and flung a dental hygienist across the room.

Dr. James Ross had just left the room when he heard the loud collision. After running back to the exam room to see what had happened, he found his patient stuck under the SUV, screaming for help. Dr. Ross, along with the patient, pushed against the car and were eventually able to back the SUV off of the patient’s lap.

The patient, driver and dental hygienist were all treated for injuries at the scene and were later transported to a local hospital to receive further treatment. None of the injuries were believed to be life-threatening.

Local rescue workers were able to extract the car from the building around 2 p.m., about an hour after the accident occurred. They believe that the driver was attempting to back her car into a parking space upon pulling into the parking lot. She had not, however, put her car into reverse before applying pressure to the gas pedal, and was subsequently launched forward through the brick wall of the building.

Dr. Ross said that the driver is a longtime patient of his and one of the nicest people he knows. He added that she was very distraught after the accident and couldn’t believe what had happened.

The accident is currently being investigated by the local Novi Police Department.
