Detroit Nonprofit Still Needs Meal Delivery Van After Thief Crashed It

    111123-N-HW977-185

A Detroit charity known for serving meals to the homeless has had its van stolen — and it’s been damaged beyond repair.

Around 2:40 a.m. on Tuesday, July 21, a thief broke onto the Cass Community Social Services lot and stole their Chrysler minivan from a fenced-in area.

The nonprofit’s security footage showed the thief speeding away in the van after hot wiring it, even hitting a stop sign as he drove off.

But the next day, the van turned up totaled.

The van, which had around 250,000 miles on it, was used regularly to deliver meals to about 320 of the area’s homeless population. They serve around one million meals per year.

Rev. Faith Fowler, the executive director of the organization, said that she’s praying someone will donate a van to the charity.

“It doesn’t matter what year, what color, what make, model. If it runs, it’s the right vehicle,” she said.

On the group’s Facebook page, the charity noted that they had to pay $75 to identify the van and more to tow it or $250 to leave it where it was.

So far the organization hasn’t received a new van or set up any fundraisers, but they have put out the call for one on Facebook. In the meantime, the nonprofit’s staff members have all used their own vehicles to continue delivering meals, but none of them have vans.

However, the incident hasn’t stopped the Detroit charity from helping others.

Last week they paired up with Paul Mitchell School stylists to give haircuts and grooming to 250 homeless adults in Detroit. Those who took advantage of the event, hosted outside the charity’s activity center, also received free meals and health screenings.

In addition to helping the homeless, Cass Community Social Services also sells green products made from recycled materials.

Just as textiles can be salvaged 90% of the time and turned into clothing donations, the group uses tires illegally dumped in the City of Detroit and turns them into sandals known as Detroit Treads.

By making the sandals, which have been ordered by people in more than 45 states, the nonprofit is also able to provide formerly homeless people with jobs.

Historic Detroit Mansion Getting HGTV Treatment

    HGTV

Quicken Loans is partnering with HGTV’s Nicole Curtis (of the show Rehab Addict) and the Brush Park Development Company to restore the historic Ransom Gillis mansion in Detroit, the mortgage company announced on its blog July 23.

“Both Quicken Loans and Nicole Curtis are passionate about the city of Detroit and its exciting, ongoing revitalization,” said Donna Stephens, senior vice president of ad sales for Scripps Networks Interactive, the parent company of HGTV, in the announcement. “I can’t think of a more meaningful collaboration for Detroit than having these home and finance experts come together on such an impactful project.”

Renovations have just begun, and will focus on incorporating locally sourced fixtures and furnishings to reflect Detroit’s rich history.

The mansion was built between 1876 and 1878, designed by Henry Brush and George Mason as a single-family residence. It has sat unoccupied since the mid-1960s.

The property will be reconfigured into two separate residences.

Its renovation kicks off a much broader development plan that will involve building on or rehabilitating 8.4 acres in the Brush Park neighborhood. That will include restoring other historic homes, as well as constructing new mixed-use housing, retail and public green space.

Of the more than 300 living units that will be added, at least 20% will be classified as affordable housing. Construction is scheduled to be completed in 2017.

“Brush Park is a vital neighborhood that is about to see a significant investment in revitalization and new construction. Once completed, this area is going to become an anchor for the growth of Detroit’s neighborhoods,” Quicken Loans President Jay Farner predicted.

The eight-part series covering the Ransom Gillis renovation process will debut on HGTV this November. On top of that, HGTV and the DIY Network (a sister channel) will be creating bonus vignettes illustrating the homebuying process from start to finish. Many homeowners don’t realize how many steps go into buying a house, from getting pre-approved to getting an inspection (something all homeowners should do but only 77% do) to going through escrow. They’ll also be exploring how to renovate a home to suit a buyer’s individual preferences.

  • Husband and Wife Duo Work to Restore Detroit’s Properties

Husband and Wife Duo Work to Restore Detroit’s Properties

    Using a tape measure

Generating an estimated $47 billion in revenue annually, it’s safe to say the home remodeling industry in the United States has made a strong post-Recession comeback, even in Detroit. After years of being stuck in a rut, the metro-Detroit housing market bloomed this spring — and is set to become even hotter this summer — thanks to lenient lenders, low down payment initiatives and newly restored properties.

In particular, one husband and wife team is helping to make homes and businesses throughout the Detroit metro area look and feel beautiful again. Andrea and Sal Lupo are combining their years of experience to design, build, and add the perfect finishing touches on commercial and residential properties to help reinvigorate the area.

Located in the northern outskirts of Detroit in Rochester Hills, Lupo Interiors, LLC was founded by Andrea, who graduated from the College for Creative Studies with a concentration in Interior Design. In 2013, she began offering full time services. Similarly, Sal founded Lupo Custom Painting, LLC which is also located in Rochester Hills. Sal began honing his craft in the remodeling industry at a young age and opened his first business 18 years ago.

In true power-couple style, Andrea and Sal combine their expertise in their respective fields to deliver a cohesive finished product. Andrea provides custom interior designs for both commercial and residential clients, from small single-room projects to sprawling 6,000 square foot homes to corporate buildings. She makes it a point to involve herself in the process at every step of the way. Serving as the team’s muscle, Sal specializes in framing, drywall, carpet installation, and interior and exterior painting for both commercial and residential clients.

Working both individually and together, the couple has seen an increase in business and are anticipating even more as Detroit continues to experience city-wide revitalization. Homeowners and business owners are spending more to renovate all or parts of their properties as a renewed sense of pride sweeps the Motor City.

Over time, Detroit and its residents have earned a reputation for continually being resilient in the face of adversity, a sentiment highlighted by the efforts of Andrea and Sal to breathe life back into the city’s properties.

  • Detroit’s Only Elder Abuse Shelter Flooded With Calls

Detroit’s Only Elder Abuse Shelter Flooded With Calls

    Happy Telephone Operators

Michigan nonprofit Jewish Senior Life opened a shelter for victims of elder abuse last week in Oakland County, and staff say the phone is already “ringing off the hook” with callers in need of help.

“We’ve had anything from veterans, to people living with their own children, to people who want to volunteer their time or donate,” said Rochelle Upfal, CEO of Jewish Senior Life. “It’s a hidden epidemic because this [problem] hasn’t been discussed openly.”

Experts say elder abuse is vastly under-reported, and includes everything from financial exploitation to physical abuse. In 2014, the state’s Adult Protective Services investigated 13,511 complaints of elder abuse, but advocates say far more aging Americans are likely abused in Michigan each year.

Nationwide, about 1.6 million Americans live in more than 17,000 nursing homes, and experts say the elderly are abused in one out of every three nursing homes. One study found that between January 1999 and January 2001, 5,283 facilities were cited for about 9,000 elder abuse complaints.

Upfal says the high demand at the new Elder Abuse Prevention at Jewish Senior Life shelter shows that the issue has since reached crisis levels. The new shelter is open to people of all faiths and is the first of its kind in Michigan.

Seniors who are sent to the shelter will be taken in by one of four retirement homes run by the nonprofit, and will live free of charge among other residents.

“For us, it is using our existing retirement community where they have access to safe housing and a social worker until they either can go back home or find suitable housing,” Upfal said.

The new program also received a $25,000 grant from the state government. To learn more information about the new shelter, or to report elder abuse, Michigan residents can call the shelter’s 24/7 hotline at (248) 661-0123.

  • Broken Fire Hydrants Becoming a Big Issue in Detroit

Broken Fire Hydrants Becoming a Big Issue in Detroit

    Fire alarm
Fires in Detroit have become increasingly worse and dangerous, as a number of fire hydrants in the city are broken. The neglect of these fire hydrants seriously affects the efficiency of the Detroit Fire Department, which is one of the busiest in the country.

A local man by the name of Steve Neavling founded a website called the Motor City Muckraker, and he is now fighting with city hall to fix this issue. He is using his site to track every fire in the city this year, and the biggest find has been the broken fire hydrants around the city. Because of these broken fire hydrants, fires grow into more uncontrollable situations while firefighters search for a working hydrant.

There are areas right in downtown Detroit and its historic districts that have two or more blocks in a row with no working fire hydrants. By the time firefighters were to get to one that works and set up the equipment needed to reach back to the house, the building would likely already be a total loss. This is a violation of federal laws, which dictate that hydrants must be located within 500 feet of a house, not to mention the extreme danger it poses.

When Neavling brought this issue to the town hall, they told him there were http://www.minale.com.au/buy-cialis-tadalafil-online/ only 70 broken hydrants in the city. Skeptical, he conducted his own research. After surveying 15% of the 30,000 hydrants in Detroit, he found 279 broken hydrants. If you were to take that number and use it to estimate the number throughout the whole city, it works out to an estimated 1,800 broken hydrants.

An even bigger issue within Neavling’s research is the stubbornness of City Hall, which will not admit that there is an issue, nor help him with his research. He filed a Freedom of Information request, which was denied because the city said releasing that information would be too dangerous. If arsonists knew where the broken fire hydrants were, they would have the perfect target. Now, Neavling is suing them for the information.

The poorest neighborhoods are the ones most at risk from this issue.

Homeowners are encouraged to practice good fire safety in their homes. Make sure you don’t leave anything plugged in, and if you haven’t replaced your smoke detector lately, you probably should. They should be replaced based on the recommendation of the manufacturer, or at least once every 10 years. Families should have an evacuation plan in place, including a location to meet up after leaving the home during a fire or other emergency, and they should practice evacuating.
