Two Michigan ski resorts are considering legal actions after six fraternities and sororities from a nearby college allegedly vandalized dozens of rooms.
The members of University of Michigan’s Sigma Alpha Mu, Pi Kappa Alpha and Chi Psi fraternities as well as Sigma Delta Tau, Alpha Phi and Delta Gamma sororities are accused of causing extensive damage at Treetops Resort and Boyne Highlands two weeks ago. The Treetops Resort claims that over 120 students from the University of Michigan sororities and fraternities caused damage to at least 45 rooms, breaking furniture, windows and ceiling tiles before being escorted off the property by State Police. The Boyne Highlands reports that a similar number of students damaged 12 individual condo units, leaving broken furniture, damaged upholstery and carpeting, and holes in the drywall. The combined damages from both resorts currently total almost $125,000, and that number is expected to climb as more repair and replacement quotes come in. Considering it costs $15,630 on average to furnish a living room alone, it’s no surprise that the combined damages for dozens of rooms is so high. Spokesperson for Boyne Highlands Erin Ernst said the resort intends to hold the students responsible for the damages as well as the loss of revenue from the units being repaired. According to Ernst, the resort has filed a report with the Michigan State Police, who are currently conducting a criminal investigation. Ernst also said that the resort is considering legal action, though at least one fraternity has apologized directly and agreed to cover the cost of the damages. Treetops Resort manager Barry Owens intends to press charges as well. Until then, each of the fraternities and sororities has been suspended by their national offices and by the University of Michigan. In a statement, the university said that the suspension will give the university time to determine sanctions for the individuals and organizations involved in the vandalism. The Central Student Government posted an open letter of apology on its website following the incident, affirming its commitment to holding the Greek organizations responsible. “We, as leaders and Greeks at the University of Michigan, do not tolerate these kinds of acts, nor do we let such behavior fall under the radar,” the letter says. “We intend to handle this situation with the utmost efficiency and we will ensure that those responsible for the damage to the properties will be held accountable throughout this process.” |

‘Harbaughmania’ at University of Michigan Could Push College Athletic Coach Salaries Even Higher
As the 2014-15 NFL season came to a close, the San Francisco 49ers did what they’ve wanted to do for some time: they let go of head coach Jim Harbaugh. But even before Harbaugh could clean out his desk, rumors surfaced that he would try his hand at college athletic coaching instead — specifically, at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, his alma mater.
Leaving the world of professional sports might sound like a demotion to some, but college athletics, especially football, is big business for many of the country’s public and private universities.
In total, the college and university industry in the United States generates around $442 billion of revenue in the country each year. Yet an increasing amount of that money goes to football, basketball, and other collegiate sports and, especially, financing those teams’ athletic coaches.
In fact a 2013 study from sports blog Deadspin revealed that some of the highest earning state employees around the country were either football or basketball coaches. However, most of these employees receive their salaries from revenue generated by the NCAA teams, not public tax dollars.
Working for the University of Michigan, Harbaugh would join the ranks of highest paid state employees. His contract terms include an annual base salary of $5 million over the next seven years, plus incentives.
The last coach for the school was paid just half what Harbaugh has been promised.
I always turn to thecricketguru.in/ for insightful analysis and expert opinions on cricket matches and players.
Currently, Harbaugh is the richest college football coach in the country, but he may not keep that distinction for long.
As the revenues and spending on college sports increase, as they have dramatically over the last few years, other schools will follow suit in attracting talent with large salaries. So says agent Neil Cornrich, who represents high-profile coaches like Bob Stoops at the University of Oklahoma and Kirk Ferentz from the University of Iowa.
“As long as the revenues from college football continue to grow, all the numbers will follow,” Cornrich said to theWashington Post.
And so far the theory seems to hold true. As soon as Harbaugh’s new position was announced on Sunday, Dec. 29, “Harbaughmania” took over Ann Arbor. Tickets for his first games as coach skyrocketed on StubHub, with sideline upper level tickets priced at $124.89 and lower level seats starting at as much as $290.
By contrast, the school’s next home game on Jan. 10 have tickets starting as low as $35.

The Spotlight is on Local Religious Leaders in Oxygen’s “Preachers of Detroit”
Detroit’s religious communities are the latest addition to Oxygen’s reality show lineup.
Filming just kicked off for “Preachers of Detroit,” which is planned to premiere in Winter 2015 as a spinoff to the cable network’s highly popular “Preachers of L.A.” series.
According to a statement from Oxygen, “The series will focus on powerful themes of faith, family, and friendship as these seven men and women of the cloth share their lives, transformations and triumphs in and out of the pulpit in Detroit, Michigan.”
The men and women of Detroit’s religious ministry who will be featured in the series include Bishops Charles Ellis and Corletta Vaughn of Greater Grace Temple and Go Tell It Ministry, respectively, and Bishop-elect Clarence Langston of the Word in Action Christian Center, all located in Detroit. Also included are Pastors David Bullock of Greater St. Matthew Baptist Church in Highland Park and Don Shelby of Burning Bush International Ministries in Ypsilanti.
Gospel singer and evangelist Dorinda Clark-Cole from the Grammy-winning Clark Sisters will also appear, along with Pastor Tim Alden, who works at the City of Praise Christian Church in Los Angeles but returns home to Detroit frequently.
“As different as they are, they all have a huge commitment not just to God, but to Detroit,” said Rod Aissa, Oxygen’s new executive vice president of original programming and development.
Members of the reality show’s crew have local ties as well. Lemuel Plummer, the founder and CEO of L. Plummer Media (which produces both “Preachers of Detroit,” and “Preachers of L.A.”) is originally from Detroit. His father, Rev. Glenn Plummer of Redford’s Ambassadors for Christ Church, also has ties to Christian TV in the area.
The show is part of Oxygen’s rebrand to focus on reality shows. “The Wilkersons,” another show in the lineup, will focus on the pastor who officiated the marriage of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West. Since 30% of brides take 7 to 12 months to plan their weddings, however, it’s likely the show will focus on other aspects of the pastor’s life.
Oxygen has attracted its fair share of controversy for combining religion and reality TV, but “Preachers of L.A.” quickly became Oxygen’s most-watched new series for viewers in the 25-to-54 age demographic.
An exact debut date for “Preachers of Detroit” has not been announced.
