U.S. Army Hoping To Increase Interest In Cyber Security

blue digital binary data on computer screen

The internet is full of a lot of information, shops, and other commodities that make it a treasure trove for its users. One can find just about anything online if they know where to look. However, it’s also a danger.

Cyber security has been on the minds of many officials across the country, and many consumers, too. Recently there was a law proposed in Grand Rapids, Michigan, that aims to increase cyber security knowledge among a percentage of Small Business Development Center (SBDC) employees. The law was proposed by U.S. Senator Gary Peters and requires that at least 10% of the employees of SBDC get certified in cyber strategy counseling.

“Small businesses create two out of every three new jobs in our country each year, and they need the right tools and skills to identify cyber threats and protect their customers and their livelihoods,” Peters said.

Small and medium-sized business owners are often looking to invest in new and improved websites for their companies, with 57.7% of them doing so. This means that they need to understand what threats that site could have made to its security, especially if they have a lot of customer information stored there. New websites could mean needing new methods to keep it safe.

The growing interest in cyber security has also spread to other areas outside of the professional world and taken root in the classroom. At the Macomb Community College in Warren, Michigan, the inaugural U.S. Army TARDEC Commercial Cybertruck Challenge is underway.

At this event, 84 college students, academics, and other professionals will be given hands-on challenges that involve the systems of two semi-trucks and military vehicles used to detect IEDs. The officials at the U.S. Army Tank Automotive Research Development and Engineering Center, who organized the challenge, hope to spark interest in cyber security jobs.

“Cyber is the fifth domain of warfare now, we are fighting it on a daily basis,” said Daniel Newport, director of the science and technology cyber security group at TARDEC.

On Wednesday and Thursday, students will be attempting to infiltrate the cyber security systems to check if there are weaknesses that can be exploited.

The challenge will be at the Community College’s Sports and Expo Center and is sponsored by the Michigan Defense Center’s Protect and Grow Initiative.

  • Fans Upset Over Little Caesar Arena Roof Mascot Choice

Fans Upset Over Little Caesar Arena Roof Mascot Choice

The roofing industry might generate an estimated $46 billion a year, but right now a roof is not generating a lot of love in Detriot.

Recently the Little Caesars Arena has earned the ire of many Detroit fans for their decision to have the world’s largest Little Caesars logo on top. This counters their original design, which had a large, glowing Detriot Red Wings logo.

“(What) happened to the Red Wing logo that was supposed to be up there?? This is disappointing,” one Red Wings fan wrote.

Aerial photographs show a giant Little Caesar’s logo, the pizza chain’s iconic pizza man, being painted on the roof of the $862 million arena. The photos show that the mascot is not yet finished and was posted on the Detriot Red Wing’s official Twitter.

The Twitter post attached stated that it will be over 243 feet once finished, making it “largest Little Caesar in the world.”

Another fan expressed disgust in the decision, stating: “I think it’s sad to see that logo on the roof. You have so much history with a team like the Red Wings, so much history was at the Joe, freaking Motown, and not to mention there’s only ONE Hockeytown. And that’s what graces the roof of the Red Wings new building…”

However, despite the reaction of the fans, the early concept of the art that had the red roof and Wing’s logo dated to a time before the name of the arena was officially changed to “Little Caesars Arena” in spring of 2016. In other words, those idea renders predate the decision that the Detroit Pistons would also be playing in the facility.

The most recent renderings of the arena’s roof have shown the Little Caesar’s mascot as part of their designs, so it is following a decision made by the owners.

According to the Detroit Free Press, The Ilitch Family’s Olympia Development department, the owner, and builders of the arena did not answer any questions about the roof, nor did they return any messages Tuesday seeking comment on the decision.

  • Trump Administration Pushing Vocational Education – Good Or Bad?

Trump Administration Pushing Vocational Education – Good Or Bad?

    Back to school

There has been a large debate on Capitol Hill over the future of education in America, and that debate has spread to the minds of everyday Americans and experts. Some are in favor of expanding vocational education, while others worry about what the lack of general education can mean for those individuals long term.

An article in the New York Times cites a study done by The Brookings Institution, which shows that people who get a vocational education can actually earn less than those who follow a traditional education path.

An example of a vocational education would be that acquired by an HVAC technician, a worker who earns, on average, $48,000 a year.

Eric Hanushek, one of the researchers from the study and a Stanford Professor, wrote in a Wall Street Journal piece that America doesn’t need workers trained in a specialty; what it needs are more general and broad educations for its students.

“The largest problem of skills in the U.S. today isn’t a shortage of young workers with specific competencies. Instead it is a need for more general cognitive skills that give workers the ability to adapt to new circumstances and new jobs.”

The article in the New York Times states that getting a better vocational program for the country is a good idea and that it “remains a good path to good blue-collar jobs” for many Americans, but that the current system and any future system is not “a perfect solution to blue-collar stagnation.”

Skilled trades are experiencing a growth in demand; the HVAC equipment market is expected to grow by 4.9% in the next few years, meaning more technicians are needed. But the current workforce is aging, says the New York Times.

“We also need to think about how to retain people as they age.”

No clear solution has been offered just yet, but the Trump administration’s goals of promoting the vocational path could be either a step in the right or the wrong direction.

  • Detroit a National Leader In Millennial Home Ownership

Detroit a National Leader In Millennial Home Ownership

Detroit was one of the cities hit hardest by the Great Recession. Almost overnight thousands of home loans were foreclosed. And while other cities have slowly seen an improvement in their conditions, Detroit has struggled to get back on track. But for one group, Detroit has become an unusual haven.

Millennial homeownership in Detroit is at 40%, placing it in 19th place for home ownership in cities across the nation — second among large cities. Across the nation, home ownership for people under the age of 35 was around 33% in 2015, down 5% from 2001.

The cause of this abysmal national rating should be no surprise, considering the astronomically high student loan debt and the fact that Millennials earn a fifth less than Baby Boomers did at their age. And of course the oft-lamented propensity towards purchasing expensive coffee and avocado toast.

One of the main reasons that Detroit is seeing the higher rate of Millennial home ownership is the significantly lower cost of homes and the home buyer-friendly initiatives launched by the city’s mayor to enable more people to buy homes.

Another advantage Detroit has over other cities is that it takes much less time to raise the money for a down payment than other large markets — 8.5 years on average. Many other large cities require Millennials to save for decades in order to afford a down payment on a home.

But even despite the setbacks that have led to slower growth in Millennial homeownership, they now represent the largest share of new home purchases in the past few months. And it is unlikely that trend will stop.

With almost a third of Millennials, 31%, reporting that they plan to purchase a home within the next two years, it is no doubt that cities and neighborhoods such as Detroit, with fewer barriers to homeownership, will see the number of Millennials calling the city home explode.

  • Happier Camper Showroom Brings Vintage Flair To Detroit

Happier Camper Showroom Brings Vintage Flair To Detroit

Summer is finally here, which means many families will soon be roughing it in backyard tents and rustic cabins. After all, camping is a 15 billion dollar industry. But for those who are looking to enjoy the country in a whole new (or old) way, the Happier Camper showroom in historic Corktown can provide amenities with both vintage charm and modern luxury.

Happier Camper expanded to the Detroit area after being featured on Start Up, a TV show that highlights small, thriving businesses. Although they aren’t officially open for business yet, their showroom is already getting a lot of attention.

Their retro-inspired campers have all the allure of those original vintage campers, but inside, they’re full of contemporary comfort. They’re part Volkswagen bus, part modular living space; the interior can convert into a full kitchen or sleeping area for five in a matter of minutes. They even come with a solar panel for more sustainable gadget recharging. So even though you’re in the wilderness, you don’t have to completely let go of your tech.

Since they’re so adorable and are totally tricked-out, these campers come with a hefty price tag. Base packages start at $18,950, but custom orders go up from there. But they’re so lightweight that they can be towed around on a Kia, and they come in a variety of California-inspired colors. For those who love 1950s flair and don’t mind spending a little, they might be a good solution. And if nothing else, you can still visit their showroom or pop-up events.

In some cases, these retro reproduction campers are cheaper than the bonafide articles. Genuine vintage campers can go for a few thousand dollars up to $30,000, depending on the type and condition. Some ambitious and creative individuals make a habit out of remodeling vintage units for the glamping experience, but for a ready-made twist on outdoorsy kitsch, others find that these nostalgic new models are the way to go.

These options aren’t going to be right for every family, especially if you’re looking to camp on a budget. But at least they’re awfully fun to look at. Planning on making a visit to the Happier Camper showroom? Drop them a line first or look for them in Eastern Market, the Woodward Dream Cruise, or during the Corktown Strut.
